Gets me every fucking time. So many movies are infinitely better for his contributions, and almost none worse. A true genius. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Probably my favourite film music composer of all time. Really sad to hear. He has at least 3 scores that could easily land in my top 100. His resume is impressive to say the least, over 500 scores and classical/jazz/avant-garde pieces written during six and half decades of his career. And then there's that first "real" Oscar from 2016, which is still baffling. Anyways, one of my favourites that doesn't get enough love (if that's even possible) is the short piece Quasi Morto.
Just a head's up, Giuseppe Tornatore's latest project is actually a documentary about Morricone. It's titled 'Ennio: The Maestro' and it was 99% sure going to be slated for Cannes this year before it was turned upside down. Being an Italian documentary, I'm sure they just pushed it back to compete at Venice, but it's bound to turn up at some point this year.
Wong Kar-Wai, Quentin Tarantino, Hans Zimmer, Lina Wertmüller, Oliver Stone, Clint Eastwood, Roland Joffé, Bruce Springsteen, John Williams, Quincy Jones, Mychael Danna, Dario Argento, Barry Levinson and the late Bertolucci contributed to it.
Also, Morricone not getting Oscar nominations for any of his spaghetti western work is stupid. Not sure what happened there.

None of them were critical successes upon release. They were violent movies made outside of Hollywood, so not many critics cared for them at all. It's quite shocking to read the mediocre reviews of the Dollars Trilogy and Once Upon A Time In The West. They didn't have any nominations for anything. Also, A Fistful of Dollars wasn't even released in the US until 1967, because of legal issues.
Charlie Daniels made some legendary tunes. What a shame that he also made tunes that encouraged lynching (1989) and used racial slurs (2001), both becoming top 40 country hits. He died unrepentant for that. _________________ Add me on RYM
