March is Women's History Month, and this thread is to celebrate music made by women, who are currently very underrepresented in the overall chart. For the second year, I'll be listening only to albums by women for the month. Whether or not you're doing the same, feel free to post about your discoveries of the month here! Smile

Roseland NYC Live - Portishead (1998)

Thinking about checking out some of her live albums this month, and maybe Selmasongs as well. For the canon game I will be rotating between RYM charts for r&b, indie/jangle/twee, and art pop. Art pop will create opportunities for those Björk live albums.

Listen to more Minnie Riperton Very Happy

I like the women of electronic music like Johanna Beyer and some of the ladies I have on my overall chart. I think there's a good through line from early electronic artists up to somebody like Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith now.

Nice, more rocky/funky; One of the greatest vocalists in history. It's a tragedy that she passed away at 31.

here's some new stuff:

this new one from Nancy Drone is pretty great, one for fans of weird techno and autechre http://shop.conditional.club/album/displacement

this one from Myriam Bleau is more for the Mark Fell fans, lots of weird variable-tempo stuff to tickle your brain
http://wheretonow.bandcamp.com/album/lumens-profits

if you're wanting something adventurous but with a clearer sense of rhythm then the linear polyrhythmic journeys on Nkisi's album are worth checking out
http://uiqmusic.bandcamp.com/album/7-di...s-uiqlp002

if you want some really bonkers songs, Tender Cruncher has some whacked out stuff
http://haord.bandcamp.com/album/juicy

if you want things LOUD but still with clear song forms and stuff, this one that Bonnie Baxter put out last year is a must listen
http://hausumountain.bandcamp.com/album...an-started

and if you are ok with getting into abstract territory with noise, the duo 9T Antiope have an excellent approach to doing so

As long as were on the more "avant garde" side of things, I'm going to plug this album that almost sounds like vaporwave near the 7:30 mark.

Then, a more contemporary Italian lady.

Cool links, Chief. Thanks. (I think I remember that first one from last year?)

Only a couple days old, this thread has already shown about as much action as last year's thread on the same topic, which is very cool.

Thanks to this sight, over the last year, I've been exposed to a great array of female musicians I probably wouldn't have otherwise discovered, across a wonderful variety of genres.

Most recently, I've seen on this site a good many very modern women. Putting a more historical bent on things, I'd like to acknowledge that despite music being male dominated, especially the further back you go, there have always been great women musicians, even a thousand years ago.

German Abbess Hildegard von Bingen was writing to best music of her time way back in the 1100s. Beautiful and trancendant, she was the standard bearer of musical greatness for a good chunk of the middle ages.
