Thx Seth. Well it does help to complete my year charts: ex people pointed out that there’s a lot missing in my 1967 year chart but that’s because I haven’t covered that year yet.
On the other hand it makes me realise that there is a lot of music I just don’t like in the top 2500 and that the real gems are often hidden below rank 2500.

I bet. I'm very interested in someday doing the same. I like cultural history, so makes sense to tackle it per year, etc. You are pretty close to getting to now - will you start over and do the same 5 year break between, just in different intervals?

Hi Seth,I’m actually doing that: I started in 1963 and did 5 year intervals until 2013, then restarted in 1964 to 2014, then 1965 to 2015, then 1966 to now 2006; after that cycle I’ll restart at 1967 to 2017, which means I wil have covered every year from 1963 to 2017.

Awesome - so you are like 75% done. That's rad! Did you have a quantity goal or just whatever interested you from the year?

First I did the first albums that interested me then I took all the album I hadn’t heard yet from the overall BEA top 2500 albums of that year which can range for 20 to 70 albums per year.

At the end of each cycle I conclude with a bit of statistics so one coming up when I end 2016. For the next cycle I intens on expanding it a bit to also include the albums I already know: this would also give a bit of variety because now I too often just give short negative reviews on albums I don’t like.

Currently I’m a bit investested in Phish and there’s so much on that especially since their jams can be very long that it takes a lot of time.

More albums of 2006:
- Fox Confessor Brings The Flood by Neko Case (nr 36 on the overall BEA top chart of 2006): I actually like her voice and some of the instrumentation on this record and if all tracks would have the musical quality of Hold On, Hold On I wouldn't even doubt to put this album in my top chart. But unfortunately most of the other tracks are not of the same quality so I'll give this one a miss
- Harmony In Ultraviolet by Tim Hecker (nr 37): too many bleeps and not for me
- Lupe Fiasco's Food And Liquor by Lupe Fiasco (nr 38 ): another hiphop record
- The Information by Beck (nr 39): not my kinda Beck
- The Greatest by Cat Power (nr 40): I can make the same comment as for Neko Case: interesting voice, sometimes interesting instrumentation but songwise not the best
- It's Never Been Like That by Phoenix (nr 41): the first 7 songs are fairly common Phoenix tracks and not really my thing but then came North and Sometimes in the fall which are actually jangly rock songs and I like jangly rock songs. But overall I decided against.
- The Drift by Scott Walker (nr 42): this album is so depressing but in the bad sense that nobody should be forced to listen to this album completely
- Show Your Bones by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (nr 43): there are some good songs on this album but overall it's a bit too lightweight to actually be good enough overall
- Destroyer's Rubies by Destroyer (nr 44): and then finally an album I really liked: some quirky songwriting here but generally and overall very interesting so I like, I like

The next album to listen to is Under The Iron Sea by Keane

And my final contributions for 2006 albums:
- Under The Iron Sea by Keane (nr 45 on the overall BEA top chart of 2006): Keane is not the most exciting band in the world and this is no different on this album. They're ok but nothing more and only Broken Toy is better than your average Keane.
- Hell Hath No Fury by Clipse (nr 47): not my style
- Let's Get Out Of This Country by Camera Obscura (nr 48 ): I liked this album. It already starts well with a cute response to Lloyd Cole's Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken and it continues in the same interesting way after that.Definitely a good discovery.
- The Sufferer & The Witness by Rise Against (nr 49): I can't imagine more cliché punk than this.
- Amputechture by The Mars Volta (nr 50): I really tried to get into the first albums of this band and I never succeeded. An this one is as pompous and without any content whatsoever as those other two. I guess I'll never become a fan of theirs.
- The Dance Of The Moon And The Sun by Na... Buildings (nr 51): If I was a bit quiet these last days, this is the reason: I listened to the full two and a half hours of this album and I can't say I didn't like it. But people say you get in trance after a while of listening to the album but it didn't happen to me. There was too much change in the droning to obtain this effect for me while on the other hand it is just plainly too long. So finally: no, not for me and not enough to make me want to listen to it a second time (but of course you never know).
- Magic Potion by The Black Keys (nr 51): I liked Rubber Factory but this album again stresses their weakness: as a two man band they just don't succeed in getting enough variety in their songs.
- I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child by Man... Orchestra (nr 52 on the overall BEA top chart of 2006 and the last 2006 album to obtain an overall rank better than 2500): this indie emo is a bit too juvenile for my taste.

And this ends my journey into albums of 2006. There's many albums I like of this year outside the highest ranks but I didn't discover a lot of new albums in the top 52. This must be one of the only years where I don't really like any of the albums of the overall top 10.

This is my final list with at the start the overall BEA rank and after that the BEA year rank and then my personal rank of the year before and after this listening session:

That BEA top 10 for 2006 doesn't have a whole lot I'm interested in - I like Newsom and am meaning to check out Donuts, but it seems like a pretty weak list overall.

160 Black Holes And Revelations By Muse 2 - 11
196 Ys By Joanna Newsom 3 - To listen

Finally a start of albums of 2011 I listened to:
- Bon Iver, Bon Iver by Bon Iver (nr 1): more lushy produced version of the first album but the fact that this album is the number one of 2011 says a lot about the quality of the year 2011.
- El Camino by The Black Keys (nr 6): I always start listening to Black Keys albums with a lot of prejudices: 2 piece band with not a lot of variety etc blah blah blah but this album was not too bad especially because of two tracks: Lonely Boy and Little Black Submarines (compared many times to Bohemian Rhapsody).
- 21 by Adele (nr 7): I don't like her voice or her songs
- Hurry Up, We're Dreaming by M83 (nr 8 ): this album has the same order of grandeur that ex Arcade Fire has and some of the tracks are not bad but it's not album that I would give a second listen.
- Kaputt by Destroyer (nr 10): I was nearly tempted to like this album but overall the quality of the songs is not completely up to speed.
- Strange Mercy by St. Vincent (nr 11),
Section.80 by Kendrick Lamar (nr 14),
Exmilitary by Death Grips (nr 16), Torches by Foster The People (nr 17),Burst Apart by The Antlers (nr 19), Take Care by Drake (nr 25): all of them not really my thing

The next album to listen to is Ravedeath 1972 by Tim Hecker

I've got more than 60 albums in my personal chart of this year but most of them are not from the BEA top 2500: this year seems so dominated by pop and ambient-like music so I'm gonna be fairly short:
- My Head Is An Animal by Of Monsters And Men (nr 27), Ravedeath, 1972 by Tim Hecker (nr 28 ), The English Riviera by Metronomy (nr 29) are all not my thing
- Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds by N...ying Birds (nr 30): but this album surprised me in a good way: it's not as bombastic as your average Oasis and the good song writing skills seeps through in every single track. A very good solo album and better than most Oasis albums.
- House Of Balloons by The Weeknd (nr 31), w h o k i l l by Tune-Yards (nr 32), Watch The Throne by Jay-Z & Kanye West (nr 33), XXX by Danny Brown (nr 34), Born This Way by Lady Gaga (nr 35), Black Up by Shabazz Palaces (nr 38 ), Replica by Oneohtrix Point Never nr 39), Space Is Only Noise by Nicolas Jaar (nr 41): are all not my thing

but there was this strange one:
- Knife Man by AJJ (nr 37): Andrew Jackson Jihad who changed his name in 2006 to AJJ is a strange guy and definitely has got his issues but some of the songs on this album are so honest you just have to appreciate this. Currently this album won't be very high in my top chart but I want to include it anyway because I think it might be a grower (not completely comparable but a way in the sense of Daniel Johnston).

The next album to listen to is Smoke Ring For My Halo by Kurt Vile.

This is already my last contribution for 2011:
- Smoke Ring For My Halo by Kurt Vile (nr 42 on the overall BEA top chart of 2011): I only knew Kurt Vile from his latest albums but this one of 2011 was already a good start.
- The Rip Tide by Beirut (nr 43): This is to me the best album of Beirut I've listened and there are even a few tunes here I actually like also because his voice is not playing the dominant role it has on other of the albums. Though still not completely my thing
- Every Kingdom by Ben Howard (nr 44): not completely my thing
- Biophilia by Björk (nr 45): this must be Bjork at her least musical. I'm already not a big fan of her so certainly not this album.
- The Year Of Hibernation by Youth Lagoon (nr 46): not my thing
- Dive by Tycho (nr 47): more bleeps in this year of bleeps which don't go anywhere
- Giles Corey by Giles Corey (nr 48 ): well what can I say: don't listen to it if you are feeling depressed because it's scary and indeed depressing. Musically there are some moving pieces on it but overall I don't know: On the one hand it is moving on the other hand it's on the wrong side of self loathing and misery in the wrongest sense possible so no, not for me.
- Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will by Mogwai (nr 50): not one of the best Mogwai albums so I finally decided not to include it in my 2011 top chart
- Grace For Drowning by Steven Wilson (nr 51): and the same goes for this album. I normally listen to Steven Wilson twice and in many cases I get them the second time but I don't think I will for this one: just a bit too much noodling for my taste
- An Empty Bliss Beyond This World by The Caretaker (nr 52): there might be a certain interesting concept behind this album but finally it comes down to very old uninteresting music
- Velociraptor! by Kasabian (nr 53 and the last album in the 2011 BEA top chart with an overall BEA rank better than 2500): it has some links to the madchester sound but there are many bands which have made much better albums round that time. Not really inspired.

And this end my journey through the year 2011, for me not the best year in music especially as far as the albums ranked 2500 or better are concerned (as you will notice hereunder). This is the final list of the year with at the start the BEA overall rank and after that the BEA year rank and my personal year rank before and after this listening session:
