Shocking news about the passing of Prince Rogers Nelson. Growing up in the eighties the singular musical icon l loved the most. He released an album every year all of them were touched with greatness with the Purple Rain soundtrack and Sign of the Times amongst the very best albums of the decade. Even his not so great albums would have 3 or 4 killer tracks and I remember how excited l was walking to the local record shop to find what he had in store for me this time. It was a chocolate box where surprises were guaranteed. No other artist since can compare to his run in that decade and probably only The Beatles, Miles Davis and Bob Dylan in the past. Now kicking myself l didn't see him live. Took it for granted he'd be around forever, thinking he'd be one musical icon that would live to a ripe old age and deserved to.
I was lucky enough to see him twice, and both times rank in my top ten gigs of all-time (the first in particular was my favourite ever until I saw D'Angelo last year). I stood at the bar and almost cried earlier at the thought that he'd died, until the barmaid thankfully interrupted my train of thought by asking what I wanted. I find the idea of being saddened by the death of somebody we don't actually know sort of strange, but this one fucking hit me. I'm drunk and rambling, but me and some friends met up and played some Prince on a jukebox, just as we did when Bowie died. This one hurts more for me (though I was in a minority amongst my friends on that one). Prince is just the fucking man. Anybody who has ever enjoyed being on a dancefloor understands how amazing he is. The fucking god. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
What skinny said almost exactly. Saw him 10 years ago and it was one of the greatest shows I've seen.
And yeah, I've been misty/teary whenever not busy enormous go to distract me all day as I try to work. Prince really was the man. One of truly top echelon badasses in music. I miss knowing he was around somewhere keeping it groovy. _________________ -Ryan
