I listened to this constantly in the early 2000's.
I've heard John had most creative control on it... even the bass parts.
Besides the obvious good songs, Throw Away Your Television is possibly one of my favorite RHCP songs (for the message, but the music is great too). Possibly one of the most creative guitar solos I know (even if it is just an effect).

I don't want to call this album hit or miss because I like most of it, just not as much as BSSM or Californication. The title track is awesome, Don't Forget Me is incredible, and the first half of Venice Queen is so beautiful. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

A bloody excellent album, not their best album, but certainly top 5. Perhaps fourth. Definitely worth a listen.

Probably my favourite RHCP release even if it is way too long. Love the Beach Boy influenced harmonies.
Californication was a more digestible length but had a few weak points and at least the mixing on By the Way is bearable - albeit still loud.

It really does feel like it, too, with his back vocals and the harmonizing and all, and his guitar sounds more mellow than ever before. Probably the reason why it's easily my favourite RHCP release after BSSM. Some of it could be nostalgia though. I listened to this a lot when it came out, I was 11 at the time, and you could argue that it was the first time I was actively a "fan" of a band (listened to their 1991-2002 albums over and over).
It's been a while since I gave it a listen, so I can't say how well it holds up for me now.
