I like what I see so far, 111th. I don't know if you're taking suggestions, but here are some I would like to see:

Pet Sounds-The Beach Boys (I'm sure you would have thought of this one)
Forever Changes-Love
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea-Neutral Milk Hotel
The Ramones and Rocket to Russia-The Ramones
Murmur, Automatic for the People-R.E.M.
Let it Be-The Replacements
What's Going On-Marvin Gaye
Call Me-Al Green
Horses-Patti Smith
After the Goldrush-Neil Young (He's Canadian so I'm not sure about this one)
The Band-the Band
Younger than Yesterday-The Byrds
At Folsom Prison-Johnny Cash
Red Headed Stranger-Willie Nelson
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us
Back-Public Enemy
69 Love Songs-The Magnetic Fields
Bee Thousand-Guided by Voices
Daydream Nation-Sonic Youth
Fun House and Raw Power-The Stooges
Transformer-Lou Reed
The Modern Lovers-The Modern Lovers
#1 Record/Radio City-Big Star
The Soft Bulletin-The Flaming Lips
Slanted and Enchanted-Pavement
Never Mind-Nirvana
Kind of Blue-Miles Davis
Giant Steps, A Love Supreme-John Coltrane
Live at the Apollo-James Brown
Nebraska, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town-Bruce Springsteen

Thoughts? Anyone agree or disagree strongly with any of these? Of course I understand we probably can't be too obscure as people are going to need to be able to vote.

The list looks good so far: There are certain great American artists/bands that are hard to represent album-wise. Johnny Cash comes to mind. I'm not sure that Man Comes Around is his best, but I own it, so if it stays, I can definitely vote. Are compilations allowed? Because I wonder if we can represent artists such as Hank Williams, Billie Holday, Robert Johnson, Otis Redding, and James Brown.
hmmm...

Here's a couple more suggestions:

Lady Blue, I've Never Loved a Man the way I Love You- Aretha Franklin
Inner Visions-Stevie Wonder
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-Wilco

This is gonna be fun!

Before we get started, we should address a few issues:

1) Is there any way we could increase the number of participants perhaps by doing mass private messages to members, including the list of albums in the body of the email we're voting on, before we start?

2) I'm not the most up to date person technology-wise, but in the case of an album people haven't heard, is there anyway or anyone who could set up an online filesharing system or maybe email a file of the album to that person somehow?

3) Can we get the album master to promote the tournament more, maybe featuring some kind of prominent eyecatching visual on the homepage to draw people in? I noticed there's a big empty space in the bottom right hand corner of the homepage that doesn't have anything on it. Or if we could get a Google hit for "Best American Albums."

Any other suggestions/concerns? We should have a plan for this stuff before the tournament is off and running. I really think activities like these album tournaments make this site more fun and inviting for music fans. Looking forward to the tournament. Very Happy

Hi 111th. I'm in a real hurry right now, but these are the ones that I would really like to see in the contest. I didn't have much of a chance to go through your choices so I apologize if any of these are already there:

(in order of preference)

1. Black Saint & the Sinner Lady-Charles Mingus (1963)
2. Trout Mask Replica-Capt Beefheart (1969)
3. A Love Supreme-John Coltrane (1964)
4. VU & Nico-Velvet Underground (1967)
5. The Doors-The Doors (1967)

6. Jazz Composers Orchestra-Michael Mantler (1968)
7. Parable of Arable Land-Red Crayola (1967)
8. Unit Structures-Cecil Taylor (1966)
9. The Modern Dance-Pere Ubu (1978)
10. Escalator Over the Hill-Carla Bley (1971)
11. Twin Infinitives-Royal Trux (1990)
12. Y-Pop Group (1979)
13. Ascension-John Coltrane (1965)
14. Lorca-Tim Buckley (1970)[/b]
15. For Alto-Anthony Braxton (1968)
16. Spiritual Unity-Albert Ayler (1964)
17. The Shape of Jazz to Come-Ornette Coleman (1959)
18. Bitches Brew-Miles Davis (1969)

19. The Good Son-Nick Cave (1990)
20. Suicide-Suicide (1977)
21. Not Available-Residents (1974; rel 1978)
22. Lullaby Land-Vampire Rodents (1993)
23. Starsailor-Tim Buckley (1970)
24. The Ascension-Glenn Branca (1981)
25. Saxophone Improvisations Series F-Anthony Braxton (1972)
26. Fare Forward Voyagers-John Fahey (1973)
27. Improvisie-Paul Bley (1971)
28. Yerself Is Steam-Mercury Rev (1991)
29. Free Jazz-Ornette Coleman (1960)
30. Well Oiled-Hash Jar Tempo (1997)
31. Atlantis-Sun Ra (1967)
32. Out to Lunch-Eric Dolphy (1964)
33. Kind of Blue-Miles Davis (1959)
34. Dream Theory in Malaya-Jon Hassel (1981)
35. Streams-Sam Rivers (1976)
36. Spiderland-Slint (1991)
37. Geek the Girl-Lisa Germano (1994)
38. Blonde On Blonde-Bob Dylan (1966)

and those are all the American masterpieces in my opinion. The ones in bold are the most famous and should be added no matter what (again, I apologize if they're already up there, I didn't get the chance to go over it).

Though I really hope you decide to add the entire top 15. Personally, I wouldn't mind if you extended the list past 64 to make it more complete.

Thanks

I think extending it past 64 could be warranted since there have been considerably more masterpiece albums made in the US than elsewhere.

Nice list so far

Some choices I would add, and some have been mentioned before:

This ones could get far

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and Sinner Lady
Pearl Jam - Ten
Smashing Pumpkings - Siamese Dream

Experimental albums which may or may not get far

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats, or Were Only in it for the Money, or Freak Out
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Red Crayola - Parable of the Arable Land
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance

Personal Favorites which may not get far

Morphine - Cure for Pain or Good
Mr Bungle - California or Disco Volante
Ween - Chocolate and Cheese

Some newer stuff from this decade so far

The White Stripes - Elephant
TV on The Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
The Strokes - Is this It
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

Some albums that are already on the list and I wouldn't consider of (IMO)
And I'm not saying they are bad albums, I just think they won't go anywhere.

Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
Today! - The Beach Boys
Rocket to Russia - The Ramones
Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen
Music From the Big Pink - The Band

hmm... BC, I think you're wrong about Blood on the Tracks. That is easily one of the best American albums ever (ranked #18 overall on this site) and looking at member's charts (it's on 11), it is well-appreciated on here. I happen to adore Darkness on the Edge of Town. Have you listened to it? I think it's better than Born to Run, but that's just me. Music from Big Pink doesnt' necessarily have to be on here. I've never heard the Beach Boys Today! Wow, we're already voting and arguing and we haven't even started this thing yet. Laughing
