Update: Bracket has been created and is located here:
Bracket

The first four match-ups will start on 11/13.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I posted about this in the Game Suggestions thread, but I didn't get a response so I figured I'd make a thread for it since there seemed to be interest. The weather is getting colder which means it's the perfect time of year to listen to some metal. It's a genre that's sadly under-represented in the charts for this site, and though it seems a lot of people are interested in ranking films, I am not one of those people. So, metal tournament anyone?

Even in a metal tournament we need rules, so here they are:

1. All subgenres of metal allowed. Heavy, black, doom, death, sludge, stoner, pagan, thrash, drone, power, speed, Viking, pirate, nu, hair, glam, whatever. I don't want to have any arguments about what is and isn't metal, so RYM's genre designations will be the final decider on whether an album is metal or not should disagreements arise.

2. Album pool consists of 64 albums, starting with one three nominations per user.

3. Only albums outside the top 750 albums in the overall chart are eligible. This is because everyone lots of people have heard Master of Puppets and Number of the Beast and I want to uncover some hidden gems. 750 is a pretty arbitrary number, but it's consistent with the Hip Hop tournament from a few years back, and honestly there are probably more hip hop albums in the top 750 than metal albums.

Nominations are now (mostly) closed.

Thanks to Mercury for making the definitive Best Metal Album Tournament chart

Yeah I'm down. 750 may work. Or 1000. I don't mind either way.

Turns out there are hardly any metal albums between 750 and 1000 so it doesn't make much difference. I went through really quickly but I counted about 10. Also it's not worth this much analysis. 750 it is!

I updated the OP to reflect this; I'll also leave this thread open for general tourney info/banter/trash talk. And update it with a bracket once we have one. In the mean time I'll make a thread for recommendations just to keep that separate.

Edit: JK, making this all one thread. Nominations are now open, so nominate away!

I'd would nominate a Sabbath album but all the good ones in the top 1000. Anyway...

Kingdom Come - Sir Lord Baltimore
Undertow - Tool
System of a Down self-titled

For
Me it was tough. Not cuz I have a lot of favorites in the genre, but rather because as of yet there are very few I truly love. So, this tournament will hopefully be great to reinvigorate my interest in metal or some of its subgenres.

It came down to Sad Wings of Destiny, Seasons In The Abyss, Leprosy, Panopticon, some melvins album or suicidal tendencies album, etc... But the easy choice of nom for me is

Filosofem by Burzum

Just amazing. It's the only album in the massive genre of METAL that I really love outside of Reign In Blood and early Metallica. (I know I know I sound like a basic bitch...and I am when it comes to metal sadly)

Glad to see the excitement, put we're sticking to one album per person for now. I'll put you down for Kingdom Come since it's the first one you listed, let me know if I should change it.

Yeah, I figured that's a better way to get this started, we can always tweak the rules if need be as we go. Nominate away Very Happy
