|
Just like the controversial Music opinions thread, but for movies
- Russel Crowe's only good performance is in A Beautiful Mind
- David Fincher's Best Movie is the Social Network
- The Narration in Sunset Boulevard pretty much ruins the movie
- Dr Strangelove isn't that funny
- Gladiator is terribly overrated
- Boyhood is a gimmicky movie that tries to cover up is lack of interesting content by trying to be nostalgic
- Scott Pilgrim vs the World is better than the Entire Cornetto Trilogy
- Albert Brooks is one of the most underrated directors of all time
- Christopher Guest's movies aren't that funny
- Richard Linklater's Best movie is Dazed and Confused _________________ Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me.

- No it doesn't. If anything, it reinforces the movie thematically, adding to its dreamy/nightmarish quality and further underlines 'past within the past'/house of wax vertigo feel that's supposed to be disquieting.
- I agree, but I'm not sure it's supposed to be hilarious. The grotesque elements are as many nods to the absurdity the world has come to, more than 'a gag a minute' type of comedy. Plus, I do believe that Mandrake / General Ripper dialogue when Ripper has gone completely mad is stellar, and both Hayden and Sellers are hilarious in those scenes. Mandrake's flegmatic, soothing tone of voice is a wonder. All hail Peter Sellers.

-Not only do I find that The Godfather series is not great, but I find that it is actually quite bad, stale and cheesy.
-The Hurt Locker is terrible
-Same with American Sniper
-Martin Scorsese is a hit or miss director
-Pixar's 20 years > Disney's 80 years
-Only God Forgives isn't that bad, I don't know why people dish on it so much
-Baz Luhrmann is potentially the worst director of the last 25 years and releases absolute embarrassments of films
-Whiplash is seriously flawed (yet I do enjoy lots of it)
-Gus Van Zant's Finding Forrester-Paranoid Park phase was god awful
-Wavelength should not be considered a great work of cinema
-Apart from Silver Lining Playbook, David O. Russell is pretty bad
-Sadly, the majority of Canadian cinema outside of Quebec is really bad
-The Night of The Hunter is too silly to take seriously
-The cinematography in Marvel films is usually terrible
-Brazilian cinema is severely under-appreciated
-Steven Soderbergh has one of the best filmographies that doesn't have a clear stand-out magnum opus
-Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Pt.1 is the best HP film
-Clean is Olivier Assayas's best film (but Personal Shopper is pretty dope)
-Romania, Turkey, Hungary and Iran are making some of the most interesting and powerful films in cinema right now
That should be enough for a few fights

I'd argue the opposite, most of the time he narrates unnecessarily, ruining the atmosphere, and basically just explaining everything that we're already seeing _________________ Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me.

How do these two go together?

I thought Dazed and Confused is literally nothing more than a nostalgia trip, while Boyhood has points behind the gimmick.

Need to rewatch the former, but I thought the difference in quality was ridiculous (in favour of Bigelow)
Quote: | -Whiplash is seriously flawed (yet I do enjoy lots of it)
| Yeah
Quote: | -The Night of The Hunter is too silly to take seriously
| I have to rewatch this, but IIRC I had the exact same opinion

Not controversial and I need to watch more from the first three.
Also I thought Strangelove was pretty damn funny.

Vis a Vis Sunset Boulevard discussion. Never found the narration jarring the numerous times I've seen it. Classic tool of film noir and it's well utilized in SB I thought.
Dr Strangelove is terribly amusing as a black comedy bearing in mind the subject matter
Whilst were on the topic of controversisl opinions can't resist a few of my own
Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are the nicest guys ever but are bland actors with little range expecially Damon.
The Big Short was horrible. Glorifies a pack of arseholes who made a killing on the back of millions of ruined lives. Stunk out the cinema.
Vertigo was recently voted by Sight and Sound as the greatest film ever. Can't entertain that notion as wonderful as the film is Kim Novak's performance is a weakness.

the world needs more films like The Dark Crystal.
the world needs more puppets.
the world needs more fantasy.
the only great anything about Star Wars was the stuff Jim Henson and Frank Oz contributed.
Lord of the Rings would have been better with Jim Henson and Frank Oz at the helm.
stop motion is more enchanting than computer animation.
cel animation is more exciting than computer animation.
actually, computer animation is mostly garbage.
Disney Fantasia is better than all of Pixar combined.
Pinocchio is better than all of Pixar combined.
suck it, Hayden.
the most exciting releases today are documentaries.
superhero movies are boring. not just overblown. out-and-out boring. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

Fair enough, but you've got to choose? Or do you think the 'cinematogrpahy' in The Godfather series is not good?
Hayden wrote: |

You don't like Cronenberg?
Hayden wrote: |

Why would you take it 'seriously' anyway? It's a fairy tale.
Hayden wrote: |

Irma Vep and, more importantly, L'eau froide, want a word (the second part of Clean is quite boring tbh).

I gotta be honest Norm, I'm not entirely sure what that first comment means. But the cinematography in the Godfather series is perfectly fine, same with the acting and so on, it's just mainly the dialogue and plot that I don't care for.
And yeah, Cronenberg is pretty great (well... maybe not as of late, but his earlier stuff). It's just that Canada should have a much larger catalogue of great directors than it has. Outside of Quebec there's still Guy Maddin, Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan (albeit he's Egyptian), but that's about all for our major repertoire. I just wish there were a lot more.
And The Night of The Hunter isn't a fairy tale at all I'm pretty sure it's even based on a true story. Not sure what you meant by that.
Yeah, Irma Vep is pretty great too of course. Just prefer Clean. I never actually made it through Cold Water... I saw it about three years ago now and kinda just wrote it off. Might have to give it a second chance. It's also come to my attention that I've never seen Boarding Gate...

Quite puzzled tbh. Not that there's a big bad wolf that's gonna blow a house down and eat children up, and a good fairy saving all the children and speaking in the sky, among the stars... plus a 'magic doll' - that's magically pregnant...
As regards the 'cinematography' comment, I was under the impression that you were discarding some movies on account of bad cinematography, as if it were all that mattered (which is more or less what I think btw), and discarding great cinematography because the story wasn't solid enough... which sort of made me wonder.
