As time permits, I'll be posting the different random things I'm listening to and some quick thoughts on them (or I'll go on a whole page-long diatribe, we'll see).

Recommendations/comments/criticisms/sexual advances are always welcome.

A Saucerful Of Secrets by Pink Floyd

I feel like this is really a transitional album for Pink Floyd. The transition from the psychy, manic Syd Barrett era, to the spacey, ethereal Pink Floyd that they eventually became, and because of that, this album feels a little disjointed. Still though, it's a good album, it's just completely all over the place, which keeps it interesting. "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" is probably the best track, it always feels like it's teetering on the edge of an explosion, but just doesn't quite get there. It's all about suspense.

Art Angels by Grimes

I give Grimes a lot of credit, she could've easily just re-done Visions and everybody would've flipped their collective lids, but she didn't, she made the album she wanted to make. That being said, I was a bit underwhelmed by this album. I don't think it's a bad album by any stretch, it's actually a fairly interesting album, and I think it warrants many more listens, there's a lot going on here, but it didn't really stick with me. It's more focused and more energetic than Visions, I think, which is a positive, and there are some definite highlights, but the whole thing felt a little jumbled.

I'll keep listening to it, maybe I'll find something more in it.

Parachute by The Pretty Things

If S.F. Sorrow is the glorious high, then Parachute is the comedown from that high. Parachute is the death of the dream, it's the coming back to reality, it's bitter and real. It's a very cohesive album, and maintains the incredible creativity that S.F. Sorrow had. S.F. Sorrow was The Pretty Things' Sgt. Peppers, and Parachute is their Abbey Road. It's a shame they've been overlooked as much as they have.

Haven't been updating over the weekend, it's been busy, but I've got some time to listen to music today

Distant Light by The Hollies

I've always liked The Hollies and felt they were a bit under-appreciated, though I will say I've always thought of them more as a singles band rather than an album band and I think Distant Light is a testament to that. It's poppy enough to be a nice album, and obviously "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" is a cool, CCR-sounding tune that was huge for them, but aside from that song, "Long Dark Road", and "Look What We've Got", there isn't much of note here. The harmonies are nice, the tunes are nice enough, but it's little more than an above-average album. Pretty cool album cover though (of course it's a Hipgnosis one)

Aurora Liminalis by William Basinski + ...d Chartier

I think this album might inspire me to give The Disintegration Loops another shot. They've never hit me the way they seem to hit other people, but this album definitely hit.

If it's possible for drone/ambient music to be big and expansive, then this is it. The whole time I kept thinking like this sounded like the white noise of being on an airplane through noise-cancelling headphones, it has this rich, warm feel to it that ever so slowly devolves into a wash of static. There's bits and pieces of melody thrown in here and there, each meticulously placed, and by the end of it, you feel like you've finished a journey, albeit not a necessarily long one (it's only 44 minutes), but still, it affects you. I've heard plenty of overly drawn-out, boring drone/ambient music before, but this album is neither of those things. It's incredibly well-crafted and is everything a drone/ambient album should be.

Very nice. I've seen a lot of fans dismiss Aurora Liminalis as one of Basinksi's more unremarkable albums, but I think it's excellent. Interested to see if anything changes when you revisit them loops

Variations Fantômes by Philippe B

Channeling my inner Frenchman with this one. Despite the fact that I have no idea what was said (I know one sentence in French), this album was really pretty. Philippe B's voice is so soft and inviting, and the music is beautiful, it's light but it's enough to really fill things out, strings, harp, some acoustic fingerpicking reminiscent of Nick Drake, it's all very pretty and a really nice album.
