Washington and the album I Believe You Liar are by an Australian band, not the Norwegian band of the same name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megan_Washington

Megan Washington is the lead singer, hence the name.

I bet this debate could go on forever, so it may be safer to leave it as it is. I do, however, disagree on two bands that have been listed as of various origin and here is the case for assigning them specific countries instead:

Fleetwood Mac - formed in England, and all original members were british. The first non-british member joined in 1971 (Bob Welch) for their sixth album. The only reason to call them of mixed origin is that for their second coming with the release of Fleetwood Mac in 1975, eight years into their career, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band. Granted, these two left a distinct mark on the band from this point on, but is merely a case of two American sailors navigating a British vessel.

The Band - while not as strong a case, The Band was formed in Canada, with four out of five original members being Canadian, and one (Levon Helm) American. Their career started out in the Ontario area as a backup act for Ronnie Hawkins (who was indeed from Arkansas, but that is beside the point). When they left Hawkins in 1964, after six years with him mainly in Canada, they were indeed named after the only American for a brief period, but this did not last long as Helm soon left the band while they were backing Dylan in 65 and 66, not to rejoin until they came into their own the following year. By the time they recorded their own albums they had settled in the US, but so have several other bands that are clearly of another denomination done at one point or another. I would therefore say The Band is a Canadian band who happened to have one American member.

I hear what you are saying ... are there any other members reading this who have an opinion? There are plenty of other bands on this site which could be debated as well.

It seems pretty simple to me. The icons are for the country of origin. In the case of a band I would presume that is where it started which may have nothing to do with the nationalities of the individual members or its current location. Therefore, Fleetwood Mac would be London, England, United Kingdom and The Band would be Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I don't quite agree with Naples there. Although I don't have a real example it is easy to make one up. Let's, for the sake of argument, say that the members of The Rolling Stones met up and started jamming while on holiday at the Costa del Sol. They stayed there the whole summer getting some material together, then went home to London, and from there on everything is as we know it from the real history. That wouldn't make the Stones any less British or any more Spanish than they in reality are.

Here are a few bands to reconsider:
    My Bloody Valentine-Dublin, Ireland
    The Pogues-London, England, United Kingdom
    The Pretenders-Hereford, England, United Kingdom
    Garbage-Madison, Wisconsin, United States
The Traveling Wilburys-Malibu, California, United States

Just voicing my support in two of the cases mentioned:

The Pogues is a clear case of a British Band.
The Traveling Wilburys is a clear case of an American Band.

I don't have an opinion on the other three, and it's too late in the evening to get one.

My hat in the ring for this:

Not well known but Gotye is, in my eyes, an Australian artist.

Even though he was born in Belgium, a majority of his music has been recorded and released in Australia. Also he started his passion for music whilst living in Melbourne.

Also I am not sure if John Butler Trio is on the site but they are Australian. I don't think there is too much dispute of that but John Butler himself has a thick American accent, even though he has been living in Australia since 1986.

Guess that brings us to a need to define country of origin, especially with individual artists. The term suggests birthplace although the religious right might say place of conception. But what about citizenship or residency, should they be considered? In today's mobile society I don't think we should consider were an artist or band records or where they perform. I favor citizenship but then what about those artists with dual citizenship?
