Five is too small of a number to sum up all of the MC’s that have incredible talent, but I will name the five that resonate with me the most off the top of my head.
- Busdriver
- Dalek
- Danny Brown
- Dessa
- The Gift of Gab

I'm ashamed to list them - please make fun of me - I have little experience with rap other than seeing it on the streets of LA from time to time and these records I've grown to really like and MTV in the 90s.
Just realized I started that list before I was introduced to Kendrick by BEA and didn't make my list.
1) Snoop Dogg - his rapping is very musical to me, even if I don't care for most of his lyrics
2) Wyclef Jean - he's terribly musical (carnival album is my favorite hip-hop record), but quality went to shit to rapidly
3) Chuck D - he says powerful things
4) Killer Mike - he says powerful things
5) Andre 3000- He raps fast and says funny things
6 Kendrick Lamar - he says powerful things
Yes, yes, don't let it shock you. He opened so many doors and I like the feeling in his rap. If I want the technique, I'd listen to Freestyle Fellowship.
Fair enough yeah. I'd check their backstory if you don't already know it. They certainly were a first for many people the world over. But they were lucky to say the least. Rappers delight is full of other peoples rhymes (the original guys) that they heard on the popular tapes doing the rounds. Big bad hank even had the audacity to spell out Casanova fly in one line of the track. Still love a bit sugarhill for sure but for a bit more authenticity check out the live convention records from late 70s early 80s. If you don't know them that is.
iYes, I know a bit the story. To be honest I am a huge admirer of Sylvia Robinson. It was Joe Bataan, Kurtis Blow and Sugarhill Gang that informed me about a thing called Rap and still I like the Party Coolness of Rappers Delight. Maybe they were a bit too close to singing but yes, I never heard rap very analytically. I know a bit of the other early Hip Hop, some from the Enjoy! compilation and some from later compilations in the 90s. But yes, it was Master Gee who's voice stuck in my head, maybe as a memory of the stunning impression this new music made on me back then when I was a kid. _________________ "But really, the thing that propels me through music is the emotional reality of it."

I like how this starts as a reference to Dunkey and then becomes its own thing at the end. Gave me a good laugh.
