I think it's a pretty strong album by itself, but like the Gorillaz album, it ranks low in his discography and was not really what I wanted to hear. I need Beck to be Nicotine & Gravy weird again.
I pretty much feel like you do. Some people like his more serious albums better, and some like the more humorous pop type ones. But whenever he repeats himself It's never as good as the First Time. For instance odelay was great, but when he made the next similar album, Midnite vultures, it wasn't nearly as good. Same with Guero. And Mutations was great, but when he repeated it on sea change it didn't seem quite as good. It's always best when he tries something new. I'm not quite sure where this new album fits in though. Is is it different or is it something he's done before? Hmmm. I haven't heard it enough yet. I really don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. Ha ha
Demoed some of the tracks. And got to admit I am somewhat enjoying it. Not crazy about WOW but there are some tracks on this that are really good. But do take this with a grain of salt because I still need to listen to his entire discography at some point.
That's just it... this album is just straight pop. And surprisingly I love it. Coldplay went pop and I nearly vomited. Beck did it well imo. Sure it isn't Nicotine & Gravy and more traditional pop, but somehow it is refreshing that he went full pop, and didn't make it boring (imo). To be honest it's top 5 albums of the year for me (still catching up, so maybe isn't saying that much... and the fact that I'm a big Beck fan and just like Radiohead, I think he could record his next album only using his sphincter and I'd still love it).
Having said that I really don't like Seventh Heaven or whatever that track is called. Probably one or two other songs on the album were weak. The rest were awesome imo.
Also Midnight Vultures is an unappreciated gem. Thanks for bringing it up.
I'm a freaking Beck fanboi... so take this with a grain of salt.
But to be totally honest... for me this is competing against LCD Soundsystem for album of the year.
His instrumentation and vocals are just sensational... and somehow I'm giving him a pass for what I normally would make fun of at times. Prejudice helped me overcome prejudice? idk.

Well, so am I. The only output of Becks I have any problems with are his last three releases. Everything else is gold for me. And even on the releases I don't care for, there are some stellar tracks.
I have seen Beck live, and seen what he is capable of, and I have also seen this which just makes me want a little more from him.
The new album didn't grab me on first listen. I like my Beck albums depressed sounding. My faves are Sea Change and Morning Phase, and I like Morning Phase a little better.
