My examples:

The House Of The Rising Sun
Freebird
Stairway To Heaven

To me these are just dreadful dirges but they are bona fide classic songs.

Are there any other great popular songs that you just can't for the life of you see why they are so great?

I do agree with you somewhat, sometimes I think a song is "classic" just because it was new and different at the time. Sometimes though, it's considered a classic for a reason. I personally like "Free Bird," but don't like "Stairway to Heaven." At the end of the day, it's all about personal preference.

Some will complain it's another underated/overated thread, but this time it's about songs, not albums, isn't it ?

Yes. Songs not albums. And of course there are many underrated/overrated topics, even this may have been done before - will there come a day when there's absolutely nothing left that hasn't already been done?!

ok, so I'd say :
The Smiths : "This Charming Man"
The Cure : "A Forest"
Morrissey : "The First of The Gang to Die" (not really a classic)

I don't get what the difficulty is with this, like sure there's plenty of well regarded stuff that I do not care for at all but there's always something to be like "oh yeah people are responding to that aspect". like with the animals song, its the vocal performance right?

Freebird is the quintessential coming of age/moving on song. No way it's not a classic.

Not really. I just find it a dirge of a tune.

I love the first two enormously but wouldn't expect to see them appear in, say, a top 50 list of classic pop songs.
