When this came out I liked it fine but thought was a bit overrated. And then when her next came out, Whip Smart, I thought it was 10 times better. The music wasn't as one-dimensional as exile, the the songs were better, it had better Arrangements and it was more varied, she sang better. Yet everyone said it was a huge disappointment. Go figure. And then when I made a 90s decade chart a couple months ago, I automatically put whip smart on it, but completely forgot about Exile in guyville. It didn't even come into my mind. Heh heh

Bigger sound on Whip Smart, yes, but I believe part of the surprise of Exile came precisely with that low-fi sound. And also I think Exile in Guyville (good title) was just a lot more focused, as are every masterpieces.

True. But nobody hass ever been able to explain to me exactly why Lo-Fi is automatically better then hi-fi. It's not like it's more exciting or more interesting or anything. More like a gimmick than anything else.

Yeah, I really dislike most of the big-sounding semihits on Whip-Smart, e.g. 'Supernova'.

This is excellent though. The songs sound less professional but more moving, barer, and Phair sounds more fucked up - I'm sorry to say that while I'm glad she sounds more at peace with herself on the next (not always - see 'Chopsticks'), it makes for less interesting music overall.

'Stratford-on-Guy' is a Normcore classic of the 90s.
