I need your assistance!!!!

Here's my question: does someone have to sing actual words to be considered a singer? If someone only hummed could they be called a singer? Or if they only said la la la la la??

Watch this hilarious video from a movie. I think it's the funniest scene in the history of the world. And would you consider this to be singing??? Or not?

Best ever in this category: The Moody Blues!

Lots of bands have a main lead singer we all associate with the band, but others who take the lead from time to tome. For instance, we all thing of none other than Mick Jagger with the Rolling Stones, but occasionally, Keith Richards sings lead, including on some great songs. Ditto Roger Daultrey with the Who, but Pete Townshend and John Entwistle both sing lead on occasion, again on some excellent songs. Ann Wilson is clearly Heart's lead singer, but sister Nancy sang lead on These Dreams, one of their biggest hits. Also the Kinks with Ray Davies as the main lead, but brother Dave sang lead on one or two cuts on most albums.

Triumph has two lead singers in Rik Emmett and Gil Moore.

Even with all the personnel changes, Kansas has always had multiple lead singers.

Just like you would separate guitarists, drummers, etc. by their instrument, singers, rappers, spoken worders, throat singers (notice the music that's attached to the word singer), etc. use the voice. It's all the same, just different styles, complexities, timbral palettes, etc. I think if someone specified a particular style it always helps, but if someone mentions 'singer' then I take it to mean anything that uses the voice (though I do still have a bias to assume that includes words)

Well, for me, "singer" is more than just one who uses the voice. There are many things that can be done with the voice that aren't "singing." Rapping is one such thing, as is spoken word (clearly speaking and singing are two different things).

To include all things done with voice, the term to use would be "vocalist," not "singer."

Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, Timothy Schmidt and Joe Walsh would be an easy argument against this.

As would Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel...

Each member of the Oak Ridge Boys have all done the leading at least once.

God bless you and the members who are still here always!!!

Holly

P.S. May my most favorite member of course be with the Lord, I love my late beautiful precious Steve Sanders so much. A little history about this act in case you didn't already know of it, is that all together, there have been over 40 members going all the way back to the mid 1940's and that their name then was the Georgia Clod Hoppers even though the group did originate from Knoxville, TN which is just an hour away from me. Comus has been a recent 2 singer act I have enjoyed (recent to me).

Otherwise I gotta say my taste doesn’t grant much credence to the whole 2 (or 3 singers) is better than one. On my chart I find no example of that until number 41 with

The clash
The band

And that’s really all I care to list

Almost all members of a band sing at one point or another, but that doesn't make them a lead singer. Eventually every person in a band is going to pipe up and be heard. They would just be a featured singer.

Thank you. That's always the argument I make. If singers and rappers were the same thing, then why don't we call singers rappers? Answer: because they're not the same thing.
