Who is your favorite singer/group that never made it? You define what unsuccessful means. To me, it means, not even having made an LP. Enter Anita Garbo. She only made three singles. And this one was a hit but only in the Netherlands and Belgium. It was released in 1977 maybe one or two years too late. What do you think?

If they are considered an unsuccessful act at the end of the day, back in 1999 I was crazy about a singer in country music who's only album got released on April 13th of that year. Shane Minor is the name of the guy and only three songs from the album which was self named went to radio and the first song of the three did the best, but it only got to #20 on the Billboard Country list, "Slave To The Habit" being the name of the song.

God bless you and Shane always!!!

Holly

P.S. Shane did eventually become a full time songwriter and has at least three #1 songs that I am aware of as a writer.

"Beautiful Mess"-Diamond Rio
"Brand New Girlfriend"-Steve Holy
"Live A Little"-Kenny Chesney

You Can't Take It With You by As Tall As Lions

When I heard these guys broke up, I was quite sad. I loved this album and it was quite sad to find out there would be no more amazing music from them.

This is difficult. I hate to use the definition of unsuccessful as someone who never even made an album, because I mostly listen to underground electronic music and nobody makes albums. Hardly ever, at least. In Rock it would be a different story. If I' defined unsuccessful as someone who never had a hit single or album, there's too many. So I'm going to say unsuccessful will mean someone who is famous yet never had a hit single or album. And the example I always use is Laura Nyro. She had much success as a songwriter, but never had a top 100 single or album herself. By that definition, you could say she was unsuccessful.

Come on, he made a bunch of records and even has an entry in Wikipedia! Well, I said you can define "unsuccessful" and you might say anyone this side of Bruce Springsteen is a commercial failure.

He makes records. Hell...I make records. Ike Reilly makes great records, and pretty much no one outside of Chicago ever hears them. He made one with a major label, everything else is basically self released. He's good enough to sell out shows, but he can't buy a hit album, single, or anything else for that matter. I have friends with wikipedia pages...that doesn't mean their careers have been successful. Ike Reilly is my definition of my favorite unsuccessful artist. Because no one pays attention to him. How many of his albums do you own? How much of his music have you actually heard? When someone mentions him here (which would be me and no one else), how much do you really pay attention...do you go and listen to him?

Make your own definition. I'll make mine.

That is exactly what I said. Do not get me wrong. I am very happy with your choice. Never heard of him before and now that I checked I see that he is a good guy.

My second choice would be Patrik Fitzgerald whose success in real life is next to not existing and whose success on this site is entirely due to me. Cool
Stil, I would love to put Anita Garbo into some chart, but I can’t since she made no LP. So I thought I mention her in this thread.

Can't say I know many great bands that never cut a disc. Especially these days, when recording technology has trickled down to the point that it's pretty easy/economical to record.

That said, I know a lot of great bands that cut maybe just one disc that never sold any copies. Here's a few of my faves:

Lord Only - impressive, intense, intricate neo-prog
https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/lordonly

Onadime - wicked good hard/alt-rock
https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/onadime

Senses - exceptionally well crafted and delivered folky progressive rock

A Grain of Salt - awesome bluegrass band. I saw these guys live many times. The bassist, Randy Cochran, played Dueling Banjos ... by himself ... on bass!

Neil Henderson - ultra melodic keyboard based neo prog

Jane Crowe - Blues/rock vocalist with great tunes and a positively killer voice

Dead Air Radio - Dream Theater-ish prog metal
