I too like this Leo Kottke album, Bobby.

My Feet Are Smiling by Leo Kottke

I think Michael Hedges had a similar experience to Leo Kottke, in that he got a lot of attention for his fantastic guitar playing, and then subsequently struggled to find acceptance as a vocalist. Some of Leo Kottke's albums come across as a bit uneven, but I think My Feet Are Smiling, being a live album, lends a continuity to those two elements.

Here's a Michael Hedges album I like, while I'm here. He referred to his own style as Heavy Mental: a lot of percussive hammering and pulling off, and slapped harmonics, in open tunings. He was a forefather to players like Andy McKee and Kaki King, I think.

Aerial Boundaries by Michael Hedges

In a similar vein, incorporating some of what I hear in both Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges:

Beyond Nature by Phil Keaggy

I love Hedges' "Live on the Double Planet." His vocals, while not wowing, are perfectly fine. Very organic, in solid concert with his acoustic playing.

Leo Kottke: his open tuning/slide technique has yet to be matched.

Love Devotion Surrender by Carlos Santa...McLaughlin

This is a pretty amazing guitar nerd album or whatever. Both guitarists are just playing off each other and pushing it to the limit. It’s cool.

I concur on that Cheater and Lester album as well.

Also....

Blow By Blow by Jeff Beck

The varied and technically INCONCEIVABLE guitar wizardry on this is amazing.

——————

For the jazz records i keep coming back to in large part due to the awe inspiring guitar:

The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montg...Montgomery

And

Idle Moments by Grant Green

Both just feature seamless and lightning fast guitar runs which are also just so pretty and shimmery and cool.

—————

Al dimeola is pretty magnificent... I especially love the work in here

Land Of The Midnight Sun by Al Di Meola

————

And going way old school with guitar nerd albums i adore, these piedmont style blues guitarists are favorites and they all feature fast, jumpy, detailed moments of guitar brilliance all over the place, also they tend to be blind for some reason...

East Coast Piedmont Style by Blind Boy Fuller

Ragtime Guitar's Foremost Fingerpicker ...Blake (US)

The Classic Years 1927-1940 by Blind Willie McTell

And these aren’t piedmont style fully, but mix in early jazz on the first one and a varied blues palate on the latter:

Steppin' On The Blues by Lonnie Johnson
(Also the first recorded guitar solo is in this compilation by Lonnie which is cool)

And

Meet You At The Station: The Vintage Re...Gary Davis

Hi Bobby. You listen to the Aerial Boundaries album up there? Becaus that is the one to listen to. If you like, I got albums which don't have guitars you may also like but don't fit in thread.

Joe Satriani, Al DiMieola, John McLaughlin. Those are DEFINITELY the favorites of guitar nerds everywhere. Guitar nerds always talk about them.
