What is your favorite song that takes up the whole side of an album? Or even a whole album.
But I mean one long song, not a medley or a suite of songs all jammed together.

I can only think of a couple right now, but I know there's more that I like.

Paprika Plains. Joni Mitchell
Whipping Post. Allman Brothers
Birth of Liquid Plejades. Tangerine Dream
Rubycon Part 1. Tangerine Dream
Get Ready. Rare Earth

Best ever (imo), that are either a whole side, close enough, or take up even more than that... Also, I didn't limit myself to "songs" (but also Suites, Classical works, Jazz works etc) -- as most of those that are that long are not really songs anymore anyway...

Here's a top 25 (music history), though it's definitely missing several that I either haven't precisely ranked and/or haven't revisited recently:

1. String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp Minor - Ludwig van Beethoven - String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp Minor - Movements 1-7 [entire work] (1826)
2. Ascension - John Coltrane - Ascension - Track #1 [entire album] (1965)
3. Sister Ray - The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat - Track #6 (1967)
4. Atlantis - Sun Ra - Atlantis - Track #5 (1967)
5. Satz: Ebene - Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht - Track #1 (1972)
6. Pursuance/Psalm - John Coltrane - A Love Supreme - Tracks #3 & 4 (1964)
7. Piano Sonata in B Minor - Franz Liszt - Piano Sonata in B Minor - 1st Movement (or Movements 1-3 or 4; sometimes listed as 3 or 4 movements) [entire work] (1853)
8. Concerto for Orchestra - Roberto Gerhard - Concerto for Orchestra [entire work] (1965)
9. Ciaccona - Johann Sebastian Bach - Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor - 5th Movement (1720)
10. Free Jazz - Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz - Track #1 [entire album] (1960)
11. The Creator Has A Master Plan - Pharoah Sanders - Karma - Track #1 (1969)
12. Miss Fortune - Faust - Faust - Track #3 (1971)
13. Mode D: Trio and Group Dancers/Mode E: Single Solos and Group Dance/Mode F: Group and Solo Dance - Charles Mingus - The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady - Track #4 (1963)
14. Lento - Allegro ma non troppo - Cesar Franck - Symphony in D Minor - 1st Movement (1888)
15. Allegro moderato – Franz Schubert – Symphony No. 8 in B Minor "Unfinished" – 1st Movement (1822)
16. Arietta: Adagio molto semplice e cantabile - Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 32 in C Minor - 2nd Movement (1822)
17. Conclusion - Keith Jarrett - The Survivor's Suite - Track #2 (1976)
18. Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung. Andante molto cantabile ed espressivo - Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano 19. Sonata No. 30 in E Major - 3rd Movement (1820)
20. Free Form Freak-Out #1/Hurricane Fighter Plane/Free Form Freak-Out #2/Transparent Radiation/Free Form Freak-Out #3/War Sucks/Free Form Freak-Out #4 - Red Crayola - Parable of Arable Land - Track #1 (or Tracks 1-7 depending on the issue) [Entire Side A] (1967)
21. Touching - Paul Bley - Improvisie - Track #2 (1971)
22. Communications #11" (Part 1 & 2) - Michael Mantler - The Jazz Composer's Orchestra - Tracks #5 & 6 (1968)
23. Allegro maestoso - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major - 1st Movement (1785)
24. The Magic City - Sun Ra - The Magic City - Track #1 (1965)
25. Variations in Dream-time - Anthony Davis - Variations in Dream-time - Track #1 (1982)

Miles Davis was pretty good at this.

Shhh/Peaceful: Side One of I a Silent Way (forget the slash-it's one long song)
Right Off: Side One of A Tribute to Jack Johnson

So was Herbie Hancock
Sleeping Giant: Side One of Crossings
Hornets: Side Two of Sextant
Wandering Spirit Song: Side Two of Mwandishi

Another great jazz song side by Jimmy Smith
The Sermon (side one of The Sermon!)

Bitches Brew - Bitches Brew, Side 2
Pharoah's Dance - " Side 1
Chasin' The Trane - Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard, Side 2
Africa - Coltrane: Africa/Brass
Gentlemen - Fela: Gentlemen, Side 1
Zombie - Fela: Zombie Side 1
Part I - Keith Jarrett: Koln Concert, Side 1
Dogs - Animals, Side 1
Cumbia and Jazz Fusion - Mingus: Cumbia and Jazz Fusion, Side 1
MDM - Mingus (Candid Records)
Theme From Jack Johnson - Agharta, Side 4

Most of the Miles, Coltrane, Mingus, Coleman, Hancock, Pharoah, Sun Ra and the Velvets tracks listed by others would rank high on my list.

Fela recorded 45+ albums and most of them have at least 1 side-long track.

The 4 minute-long I Heard Her Call My Name opens side 2 on every version of WL/WH I've ever seen, so can't see how that qualifies, otherwise we're just arbitrarily naming long tracks.

Glad someone's brought Fela up. Both sides of William Onyeabor's Good Name are also worth a shout.

Surprised no-one's mentioned Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands yet.

My favourite 2 examples aside from Fela's Zombie would both be from LPs in my overall 100:

Un Jour... La Mort (side 2 off Paix by Catherine Ribiero + Alpes)
Morning (side 2 off It'll All Work Out In Boomland by T2)

The only one I know of is "Exist" by Avenged Sevenfold, it takes up Side D at 15 minutes and 41 seconds.
