This is what the BEA stats say about the 70's.
Top 10 and top 50 overall rank average compared for each year.

If you go by top 10 it's 71, 70, 77.
If you go by top 50 it's 70, 71, 73.
And if you went by #1 it'd be 73, 71, 75.

This might be the most beautiful part of this thread.

As Bono said to the Edge, the collection of data is... Something sexual to a scientist... Or something.

Well, here's some more data... hope it doesn't cause you to stumble, Seth.

Same deal, but '67-'73. It shows how strong the early 70's were when it comes to the top 50. Stronger than '67.

And an earlier period. '60-'62 were kind of weak, comparatively.

I am currently relistening to my favorite records from the 1970s and listening to some gems through recommendations that I have missed. I’ve got my 1970 chart relatively done, though one thing I noticed while crafting it (and was too lazy to fix) was a lot of the jazz records have the wrong year on their release – normally by a year.

my guess is 71 is actually the best for now, with my incomplete knowledge.

Yeah, the release dates for 60s and 70s jazz albums (and probably other decades too) on Wikipedia and AllMusic are often actually the recording date. Don't know if Scaruffi, who prefers listing albums by release date, is the root of the problem or just a contributor to it. (A lot of the 19XX In Jazz pages on Wikipedia are basically cut and pasted from Scaruffi's yearly lists.)

Discogs is the most reliable -- if -- the album has more than one edition available. If you want to pm me the problem album titles, I'll fix them.

Just fix all of the 60s and 70s jazz, should be easy. Wink
