Rust Never Sleeps - I see this album as being about actual and supposed heroism (or notions of heroism).\

- Ride My Lllama and Pocahontas - wild west
- Thrasher and Hey Hey My My - a personal, spiritual rescue mission away from staleness and toward integrity
- Powderfinger - defense of family and property
- Sedan Delivery - libertarian anthem about a speedfreak drug dealer

That's definitely a perspective I could roll with.

Young's great works often have a sense of moral and spiritual redemption to them, with their more violent guitar passages adding violence, ragged glory, and so forth...

I agree with said parallels to the wild west and similar or accompanying themes. In many ways Young's works can seem representative of the sort of elegaic poetry and Wild West found in Ford, to the nihilist/drunken/wragged violent glory in that of Peckinpah, and sometimes even that of Jarmusch's ghostly/expressionist/surrealist Dead Man (which he also scored).

None in particular, both albums seem to (for the most part) be a series of solid, gently emotional/melancholic and mildly compelling songs with some nice touches and developments here and there. But I didnt find either to have any real standouts. Just consistently good throughout. Same Trailer seems to alternate mood/momentum a bit more (but almost always a gently melancholic voice regardless of register, arrangement or rhythmic momentum).

(I just updated Same Trailer to 6.1/10 ... Golden Hour probably about the same or maybe slightly below)

Lingua Ignota - Caligula

2019's best album (so far, but I see nothing topping it). A "Top 20 of Decade" contender.

Thank you! Never even heard of it. Either a really good sign or a really bad one. Guessing the former! Very Happy

Some questions about The Birth of a Nation:
How much does the racist content factor into your evaluation?
How much does its historical importance factor into your evaluation?

Obviously uncalled for from a moral standpoint.

Emotionally, however naive, it marks the central conflict of the film. Griffith seems to be expressing his own hysteria of feeling threatened by black men and this is shown as a dichotomy to the nostalgia and warmth of the "white family". He (obviously incorrectly) expresses that slavery = stability and the freedom of slaves = instability, the collapse of society, etc. Immoral sociologically or as education, but perhaps compelling psychologically/emotionally as I doubt he was alone at that time in his (uninformed, racial) fears.

But obviously anyone watching it should be made aware of its inaccuracies so as not to be encouraged.

In the scenes where black men are shown in a racist light you could switch what theyre shown doing to white people with white to black, and it would probably be much more historically accurate.

*Note: if any of that is "politically incorrect" in how it is written, it was not intended. I am merely trying to talk about racist propoganda in a film. I am not myself in agreement with these notions. I am only talking about their potential significance in a cinematic and psychological sense, not a moral one, which is of course despicable.

To the degree that its historically important elements are part of what makes it cinematically impressive.

*Complicated plot and character development through many stages and storylines
*Many of its scenes are carefully staged to appear as reproductions of history from costumes to the actors to the environments to the look of the period (like a cinematic version of those old Civil War photos)
*Elaborate extras and battle scenes, some sequences were quite brutal and extraordinary for the time (up until, probably, Von Stroheim and Eisenstein ... who no doubt was particularly influenced with Alexander Nevsky)
*Close ups, fadeouts, chase scenes and how theyre edited, stories paralled/crossed/back and forth
