When I was a teenager I owned this gem. I was an idiot and got rid of it in my later teens.

Lastly I rate my albums song for song, so I feel my 50s list has pretty solid albums (even if not box sets/anthologies) - to my discovery and taste at least.

Lady Day: The Master Takes And Singles ...ie Holiday

Although she did produce some good albums later in her career, her prime years came with Columbia before the album era, and are comprehensively collected here on four essential discs.

There is a longer ten-disc version, but in my opinion it's not worth it to have six discs worth of alternate takes.

Amen.

Her early takes are fantastic.

Any of the "American Epic" series of recordings by Jack White's Third Man Record Label are reasonably priced and readily available.

Anything recorded by John or Alan Lomax.

Negro Prison Songs - Mississippi State ...us Artists

Decca Records made a great anthology for Bill Haley and other artists on their roster.

If you could be more specific with genre i could help a little more.
