Post subject: GREAT songs not released on studio album
I've been so focused on albums lately that sometimes I'll totally forget about some fantastic songs not originally released on a studio album. Thinking about creating playlist of such...
(yes it's on the 1965 capitol records release, but not the original UK release (which appears to have become the cannon in past decade or so... so for me and my album collection/streaming services it doesn't count):
I suppose this is a fairly comprehensive list for The Beatles... the bolded ones I find great:

I know that Rumours doesn't get a lot of love here. Personally, I think it's a magnificent album. But the best song from Rumours wasn't on Rumours. This is probably the best song that Stevie Nicks ever wrote. This is, by far, her best vocal performance. And it might just be the greatest Fleetwood Mac track ever recorded.
The song is about the end of her relationship with Lindsey Buckingham, and caused a lot of problems within the band, which is why it was left off of the album. The album's co-producer, Richard Dashut, calls it "the best song that never made it to a record album". I think he's right, from everything that I've heard. This is my favorite song from Rumours. And it's not on Rumours. But it really should be.
Nicks' vocal, after the guitar solo (ending at 3:20) is pretty badass...

As mentioned many many Beatles examples; particularly Rain. But that’s the beauty of discographies like that, you can find gems if you keep looking.
Radiohead have some special efforts; The Daily Mail and Harry Patch.

Excellent choice! The first time I heard that, I was like "Why haven't I heard this?!"
The obvious choice is Zep's Hey, Hey What Can I Do, although, technically it was released on an album, albeit the a collection of outtakes. Zep has another interesting one with Houses of the Holy, which didn't make it onto the album of the same name, but was deemed worthy of inclusion on the later double Physical Graffiti.
The early Moody Blues had a bunch which were eventually released as the fourth side of a double album of which the first three sides were live.

The Three Hayward tunes are all spectacular.
Speaking Justin Hayward, his very popular duet with John Lodge didn't make it onto their Blue Jays album, although it did find it's way onto the CD reissue
One of my personal favorites was the previously unreleased Missing You, which was added to Dan Fogelber's Greatest Hits... which was pretty presumptuous, but it did (rightfully) end up getting quite a bit of airplay
This song was released eventually, but with another person doing its leading. Go here for the copy that I will always prefer, I love my late beautiful precious Steve Sanders of the Oak Ridge Boys SO much!!!

Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam one of my all time favorite songs.
I had no idea Ledbetter wasn't on an album of theirs. I heard it live and totally fell in love, and swore it was a final track on one of their albums, but I guess not!

Before this gets huge...I think that there's a difference between songs that were intended for albums that were not included and songs that were intended to be and that were released as singles without being included on albums... _________________ May we all get to heaven
