Albums 15 plus years old that still sound fresh.

This is the album that spurred this thought from me.

Life Is Full Of Possibilities by Dntel

Most probably know Dntel as "the one that's not Ben Gibbard" in The Postal Service. but his first several albums are great as well. I was listening to this album the other day, I had not gave it a spin in quite some time, and I was surprised with how well his blend of IDM, Ambient, and Electronica still holds up pretty well. It might just be that electronic albums, to me, always sound a little more cutting edge, I don't really know.

What makes an album age gracefully compared to others?

Here's a couple from the first few years of the century, a timeless 2002 effort from Pat Metheny and a genuine neo-prog supergroup masterpiece from 2001 by Transatlantic.

The Metheny album has all Pat's creativity and reflectiveness and drummer Antonio Sanchez displays tremendous empathy and sensitivity in the midst of his equally impressive rhythmic acumen, yielding an album that always sounds fresh, completely independent of time frame.

For those who lament the loss of the classic prog era, Transatlantic delivered the antidote with a classic prog album that still managed to be contemporary at the time of its release. But even more, there is nothing overtly pointing either to the time of its release or the time of its homage, thus it has continued to sound both unique and classic regardless of the passage of the last 16 years.

Every great album ever.

Ultimately, it's a high degree of creativity + expressed emotional/conceptual conviction ( equals depth ) that makes an album/Classical work/any work of art age well -- not "when" it was produced.

Yup.

The last time I was impressed with an older album though which maybe isn't the most creative album was this one... the production/sound reproduction on it is top notch:

The Man-Machine by Kraftwerk
