Artists and albums that did not get their respect until some reissue or compilation years after they made recordings. I've became a bit obsessed with these sorts of projects, because they usually end up being quite good.

I'm talking about albums like;

I Hear A New World: An Outer Space Musi...e Blue Men

...and this one that I just added. It's really fantastic stuff.

This would probably fit the bill:

Colour Green by Sibylle Baier

Something of a recent obsession of mine - recorded on reel-to-reel in the early 70s, shared around family members until J Mascis got hold of some of the tracks and ended up releasing them 30+ years after they were recorded. Acoustic chanteuse in the same vein as Vashti and Nick Drake. Well worth a listen (and thanks to LittleM for the initial heads-up).

Sure there's a few others I can think of - will come back to this when I do...

Does Rodriguez count...?

I mean, people thought he was dead. Certainly his albums were more popular down the track, than they were on release.

I'm not sure if Karen Dalton had much success in her lifetime, but her 1969 and 1971 albums were reissued in 2006. A folk singer with a ragged voice along the lines of Billie Holiday, and a tragic life story.

Maybe I'm listing things that are too well known? Jude Sill's music probably also earned more respect over time than it garnered upon release.

Yeah, we could all go on listing artists who made little impact when their albums were first released, but I don’t think most of these albums rkm lists were ever ‘lost*’. Rodriguez, for example, outsold Elvis in South Africa. If you apply the same logic then Nick Drake should be listed here, which of course would be somewhat missing the point of the OP.

*Might have a point with Karen Dalton though - will have to do some digging.

Rainful Days by Maria Barton

John by John Phillips (ZA)

Greasepaint Smile by Elyse Weinberg

Any Other Way by Jackie Shane

Hitchhiker by Neil Young

L'Amour by Lewis

Lavender Country by Lavender Country

I have a chart vaguely for this (ish): The Strange, The Obscure, The Great by Hayden

Agree with Death and Sibylle Baler. Looking forward to whatever else springs up.

Numero Group is a great label uncovering plenty nowadays, check them out.
