I'll post again when I can make a more educated guess, but here's some fun data for now to help me make that decision.

Here are those years best albums that I rated in past 2 years (not all encompassing and probably not a final assessment, but final for now)... records rated 75 and above for all years in the finals:

Here's my year charts of albums I've listened to for each of those years (happened to be... hoping to do a year by year analysis some day) - but they are within a ball park of how I'd rank those albums. They also include albums with a score below 70 - my future year ranking charts won't).

Asking a question about the rules isn't being difficult. AAL2014 didn't explain the reasoning. I've participated in polls on other sites where they actually encouraged members to submit lists of different sizes and what was on those lists got the same number of points.

I definitely didn't take your question/suggestion as difficult. Sorry, it's been a busy couple days and I'm just now catching up to all the responses. This is going to be a lot of fun.

So what overall do you suggest? If you only choose to post one year, how many points do you think it should be worth? 7? I only had my set of "rules" in place to encourage critical thought in complete ranking and showing all the different users' thoughts. If you don't care much for a year then rank it low and hopefully others agree with you. Plus honestly, it will be a bit easier for me.

Bottom line though is there is still plenty of time for us all to agree on a more concrete solution or just stick with what we have. I'm open to suggestions!

Care to expand on this? Just trying to get a read on what people are thinking. Just so I'm sure, are you more for the way I put in the OP or the way PurpleHazel has suggested?

This was directed at someone else who called my question "difficult." Not intended for you in the slightest. Was just curious what your thinking was.

Since I'm more familiar with how it was handled on the other forum, I would prefer it if the the first year got 7 points however many years a person posted. There'd have to be a minimum too, at least 4 years. BUT -- I'm fine with the way it is now. If it's easier, that's a very good reason. If you think it encourages discussion or critical thought, that's a good reason too. If the majority is cool with the way it is, then I am too. And thanks for doing the work of hosting this poll!

EDIT: My post about the rules was 4 days ago. Obviously it's too late to change it now when practically everyone has posted their lists.

BEA has most definitely inspired me to discover countless albums from many genres I wouldn't have thought to try before. If you end up feeling like posting a list feel free, you'll have til March 1st!

Thanks everyone for your lists so far! I'm just now starting the preliminary math and organization of stats. Very exciting. Love seeing everyone's top album picks for the respective years as well.

Just out of curiosity, what factors are people considering for the "Best Year for Music"?

Do outside factors play as much a role as the music itself? Historical/cultural significance? Significance of advances in sound production, etc?

The music itself definitely gets the greatest weight

After that, advancements also get consideration— so long as they sound good (sometimes new in no way implies improved).

As for cultural influence, not so much. It depends largely on the culture in question. Brilliantly reflecting the mores of drug-addled hippies doesn’t impress me.

One other criterion I emphasize is the diversity of high quality music, which is why for instance, I have ‘69 ahead of ‘67. Both excellent years in rock, but ‘69 was a far better year in jazz.

Excellent question to raise and most definitely one that should be mulled over at least before a final list is made.

The reason I decided to do this series in the first place was to see what people thought about the overall output in certain years. Honestly some of the years that inspired me the most didn't make it past their respective first polls (73/75/2015..etc). So yes overall output is the main factor. As Fischman mentioned, viewing a year in more detail and for the depth of its different genres is important as well.

For me, cultural influence/impact is of somewhat importance as well, not critical, but after all let's not deny it's a reason 1967 is as noted as it is. Music is often times the purest reflection of the culture around it, and albums and songs are snapshots of their respective times so yeah, cultural impact is a factor, although not huge in my personal voting decisions thus far.

Advancements in sound, style, and production are worth thinking about as well but the quality of the music itself always outweighs it for me.

I found it a pretty broad exercise, so I made a list of five favourites from each year, and used that as a basis for comparing the years. From favourite to least favourite:

1969
Liege & Lief, In a Silent Way, The Band, Scott 4, Hot Buttered Soul

1971
Sticky Fingers, What's Going On, Who's Next, Tago Mago, Blue

1977
Marquee Moon, Low, Rumours, The Clash, Before and After Science

1967
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, Something Else by The Kinks, John Wesley Harding, Disraeli Gears

1997
The Mollusk, OK Computer, I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, Portishead, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

1994
Illmatic, Dummy, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, Bee Thousand, Selected Ambient Works Volume II

1991
Loveless, Laughing Stock, Blue Lines, Spiderland, Screamadelica
