Great experimental jazz in its early heyday. While I'm a bigger fan of Epitaph and consider it to be his magnum opus, Mingus certainly produced some brilliant things when he was more open to wearing his influences on his sleeves as he did in Mingus Ah Um. One of the more influential jazz albums of the 50s and 60s without a doubt.

While I love Black Saint & the Sinner Lady and Mingus Presents Mingus more, this is a very representative Mingus album and the best place for a Mingus beginner to start. Blues & Roots is another good introduction for the newbie.

While "Goodbye Porkpie Hat," "Better Get Hit in Your Soul" and "Fables of Faubus" (the uncensored vocal version's on Mingus Presents Mingus) get the most attention, "Boogie Stop Shuffle" is great too.

One of the records that helped encourage me to develop a more than surface level knowledge of jazz. It's still one of my favorites of the genre. Sonically immaculate for 195-fucking-9.

Awesome album. Not sure if it's my favorite Mingus, but it's certainly no lower than #2 and definitely the most representative of what CM had to offer. So much originality and creativity brought forth with so much energy. Of course, it is one of the most iconic jazz albums of all time.

I'm surprised, as highly regarded as Ah Um is, that Dynasty gets no love, given that it was released later the same year with much the same going for it. Dynasty is rightfully overshadowed by its immediate predecessor, but should still be given far greater due.

As much praise as Mingus gets for putting this whole thing together, I'd be remiss to not mention the great trombone and drum work also contained within.

That's one of my favorite things about this era of jazz. So many amazing musicians hired to carry out an artist's vision. They are as important as the bandleader to my ears.
