Records that the artist did perfectly but doesn't amaze.

Seriously, you don't have to like something just because a bunch of others think it's a classic. If you don't like In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, then embrace it. I need some people on my side.

Laughing Yeah. I didn't want to say that you should like something because it's a classic but I think it's worth trying to figure out why you don't like it at least before you put it on the dumped pile. That can be productive I think.

But yeah, theres no need for a contest to see who can appreciate the most classic albums! I find getting into a whole genre or body of work more interesting than working through classics anyway.

I'm surprised anyone can think it's boring, I honestly can't think of any other album it sounds like. I get it's a dude-on-guitar album, but the production is unworldly. He plays the guitar and sings like he's about the get shot in the head. There's trombones and bagpipes and fuckin' singing saws being thrown around from left to right. His lyrics alone are so bat-shit it's hard not to wonder what exactly he's trying to convey. Holland 1945 is probably one of the most exciting listens I can think of.

I don't want to blow any more hot air into the thing than it deserves, but I gotta ask whether we're hearing the same thing.

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys

For me this probably just has to do with how the album aged. At the time of release i'm sure it was easily a 10/10. Now when Pet sounds is having to battle the test of time, it just doesn't seem nearly as captivating or interesting. Granted I still rate it an 8/10, but it isn't something that blows me away despite it being done flawlessly.

I have to agree with Pet Sounds for this thread. It is one of the top to bottom most phenomenal and groundbreaking albums, I just don't ever feel the need to return to it much. It doesn't excite me however it does impress me quite a bit.

As for Lateralus, I felt the same way about everything I heard from Tool the first few times. Wasn't something that I fell in love with like a lot of people around me at the time. It really took me a few listens to connect but once I did I was floored each time out. Luigii, have you heard AEnima?

People are drawn in by the first 3 tracks which have varied instrumentation, and "passionate" vocal delivery sure, but what about after? Yeah there are some more trombones that color some of the tracks, some very fuzzed out guitars mixes with extremely tinny acoustic guitar. What in the world is special about this album after track 3?
Ghost and the Untitled track bring back some of the excitement, but I'm already bored by that point to care. Then, the album closes with a lukewarm acoustic number. Plenty of people have crazy lyrics that's not impressive to me either.

Here are two albums from the same YEAR that I would rank much higher that have similar values on nearly every level that this album is described.

Good Morning Spider by Sparklehorse

and

Electro-Shock Blues by Eels

I also finally listened to ITAOTS later in life after I had discovered other music.

Chief, all due respect (and I'm quite fond of the other two albums you mention), but what. That song chops your head off and pushes you out to sea. Beautiful stuff.

And I don't think I've heard any track more exciting than Holland, 1945 in my life.

(s'all good though*, to each their own)

*apart from you Pet Sounds haters

I've always felt ITAOTS was a very consistent record, I'd even go as far to say that the second half is stronger. I can imagine someone getting pretty bored with Oh Comely, but it's often cited as a fan favourite. The final song is my favourite moment on the album, easily.

Plenty of people have crazy lyrics, but it's very difficult to get them sounding authentic - like, not just crazy for the sake of it. Mangum's performance is all part of that, like he really believes in whatever he's saying and just wishes everyone else would understand.

Electro-shock blues is a stellar album, could well have been released today - some very ahead-of-its-time sounds. I've not heard sparklehorse, will need to give that a shot.

I haven't heard AEnima yet but will do at some point. I was enjoying the grooves off the first track but not really crazy about the vocals. But this is just the opener. Haven't gone through the record.

On the topic of In The Aeroplane..

I shared Chief's thoughts the first 2 times I heard the album. But something clicked about it for me on the next listen. There's still some ground to cover with it for me, but I do appreciate it far more now than when I first heard it.
