I'm looking for suggestions of those albums that often get overlooked for whatever reason. The dark
horse, the unknown underdog, the one no one thought would be good, or the album that grew on you over the years. Generally I'm interested in rock, classic rock, hard rock, metal, alternative, and grunge from 1965-1990s but any suggestion is appreciated. Feel free to use your own basis and rationale of what qualifies as "underrated" - an album that received a score of say 83/100 might still be underrated. And being underrated doesn't have to be the only focus. Really I'm looking to listen to these albums I might not have discovered or given a chance otherwise. When you make a suggestion it would be greatly helpful if you put a brief description or genre of the album as a foundation. Thank you all in advance and I'm looking forward to hearing all these new sounds. Very Happy

Here's some examples for me:

Pink Flag - Wire (stripped down punk mixed with jangly/new wave type guitars & bass lines)
Sound Affects - The Jam (early 80s "pop" punk)
Three Imaginary Boys - The Cure (young Robert Smith, even uses a distortion pedal)
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (debut without Dickinson - surprisingly good)

Sure, it's pretty popular on this website, but I had never heard of them until just a month ago or so. Wire wasn't very popular early on in the late 70s either and I'd venture to say they're still not very popular now. Although I'd agree Pink Flag isn't very underrated anymore, it still hasn't been reissued on vinyl, and its one of those albums that came out of nowhere for me.

ayy I actually listened to this today. Can't believe it's been about a year since its release. I don't ever see this as ever becoming a very popular record though, it's just Mark goofing around and I don't think he thinks of it as having any artistic merit beyond that. It's probably rated appropriately, imo. Definitely an album to listen to in twenty years time and remember what middle-aged men were thinking during this period. Universal Themes is likely still my favourite post-Among The Leaves record.

In general "rock, classic rock, hard rock, metal, alternative, and grunge from 1965-1990s" gets a hell of a lot more attention on the internet than a lot of musical avenues. I think it's a bit strange to request a specific time period (if the music's good, the music's good, right?) so I'm just gunna go ahead and say that I think Obnox could use a sprinkle more love.

Nocturama by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds

While it is still 100% deserving of its nearly universal title of worst Nick Cave album, it's really still quite good. The only real dud is "Rock of Gibraltar." Take it away and you've got one of the finest (mostly) soft rock albums ever. "Wonderful Life" would have fit right in on Abattoir Blues, the same can be said about "Dead Man in My Bed" and Dig, Lazarus Dig!!!, and "Right Out of Your Hand" is one of Cave's most beautiful love songs ever.

Off the top of my head here's some more...

The most popular Judas Priest albums are British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance by a good margin due to their respective hits "Breaking the Law" and "You've Got Another Thing Coming". But I think Priest was more fun in the 70s before they got all radio-friendly arena rocky. Sad Wings or Destiny and Stained Class are easily their best albums while Rocka Rolla and Sin After Sin are very heavily slept on.

Neil Young is another artist whose most popular albums contain the big hits... Ditch trilogy. 'Nuff said.

That's just underrated albums in the cannon of popular artists. What about the far lesser known acts whose best album isn't nearly as known/beloved as it could/should be?
