Off the top of my head here's some more...

The most popular Judas Priest albums are British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance by a good margin due to their respective hits "Breaking the Law" and "You've Got Another Thing Coming". But I think Priest was more fun in the 70s before they got all radio-friendly arena rocky. Sad Wings or Destiny and Stained Class are easily their best albums while Rocka Rolla and Sin After Sin are very heavily slept on.

Neil Young is another artist whose most popular albums contain the big hits... Ditch trilogy. 'Nuff said.

That's just underrated albums in the cannon of popular artists. What about the far lesser known acts whose best album isn't nearly as known/beloved as it could/should be?

God Bless Tiny Tim by Tiny Tim

Time Of The Last Persecution by Bill Fay

1990 by Daniel Johnston

Velocity : Design : Comfort by Sweet Trip

Velocity Design Comfort is the champion. Love that album so much.

So very many. Here's just a sampling of 10 from my collection:

Grand Funk Railroad-Good Singin' Good Playin'
Released well after their popularity peaked, this is their best album IMO. Production (and an appearance on guitar) by Frank Zappa really boosts this one.

Here's Blackfoot's best. It rocks hard and has incredible musicianship and great songs. Never got any recognition commercially or critically.

Here's a great one from pre-Joe Walsh era James Gang. Tommy Bolin's guitar work here is exemplary and most of the songs are full of life.

Fun outing here from Ronnie James Dio's Elf ( his pre Sabbath/Rainbow band)

Dust only released a couple albums, but they're goodies, and now both contained on a single CD

The Outlaws had a fantastic comeback album that got little attention

Here's another excellent Southern Rock comeback by the Atlanta Rhythm Section

No hits on what I think is Foghat's best ever

The greatest Arena Rock album ever released. Instead of the cheezy schmaltz characteristic of the genre, this one is infused with incredible middle American authenticity, tight musicianship, spirited rather than sappy delivery, and songs that perfectly reflect hope and angst in coming of age. Shooting Star had a couple hits, but this album has none, yet every last song is sheer perfection.

Lastly, my all time #1 underappreciated album. Dan Fogelberg is a big name with may big hits, but non are on this album although some songs are hit worthy and what would normally be the deep cuts are all positive masterpieces.

Duniya by Loop Guru

its definitely not classic rock, its ambient dub but its very cool.

OK an underrated popular album for me is this one:

Led Zeppelin III by Led Zeppelin

Ok its still insanely high up the Overall Chart but its not top 5 in their highest rated albums on BEA and I think its their best album by a mile. Okay Led Zep lV is very good but not perfect. I like all their albums but their third album I return to the most.

Concur. Zep III, while somewhat famous, is unfairly lost between the titans of II and IV, but for me, it compares favorably to both.

It actually has, but that's whether or consider the competency of 4 Men With Beards.

Anywho, y'all should pluck some stuff from these:

This is perfect and I couldn't agree more. It's crazy to me Sad Wings was largely composed of "throw away" or unfinished songs from Rocka Rolla.. It is easily their best album in my opinion.
