Pop punk in the form/era that is most commonly associated (roughly 1995-2006) was one I juuuust missed. Born in 95 and didn't really connect to music until 2004/5, and I spent the next few years digging through 70's and 80's music. I heard a lot of the more pop punk radio hits growing up and although I'm not all that crazy about them, they hold a special place for me as my older sister was into them. Hopefully this thread will help get me into bands and albums I missed as Green Day is about the only group I have more than a surface level knowledge on.
With that said, I recently claimed to a drum student of mine that American Idiot is like the Thriller of pop punk. Fair assessment? _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.
Green Day - Dookie or American Idiot
Weezer - Make Believe, Green Album, Pinkerton or Blue Album (their best, but not really "pop punk")
Blink182 - Enema of the State or Take off Your Pants and Jacket
Fall Out Boy - Under the Cork Tree
Panic! At The Disco - Fever You Cant Sweat Out
Although I actually really like all of these albums, I'm not sure I'd consider any of them pop punk. Maybe certain parts of some, I guess I never thought of them that way at least. You did say borderline so that's fair.

I don't particularly care for pop punk, but I would say thats a fair statement. Although, I would say its the Thriller of its genre, not necessarily equal in their quality, but that's just my opinion. _________________ Jeff Lynne 5th Beatle
Lots of good pop-punk albums mentioned in here. I’ll throw in one I love more and more each passing year. It was very ambitious for a pop-punk record. Multiple producers, bizarre lyrics, but crazy good songwriting with catchy hooks. Very underrated.
Didn’t realize I was pop punk fan until I saw After Hours and bobbyb5 lists. I listened to Pavement today to my immense satisfaction, but if I have to choose...the Pixies, Doolittle or Surfer Rosa, take your pick.
I was having second thoughts about having The Descendants on my list, then I saw that you have it too. If somebody else thinks it belongs, that's good enough for me. Ha ha.
These albums from 94-95 sum up what pop-punk means to me. Music for partying and snowboarding and the like. Not that I've ever been snowboarding unfortunately
Also this track is cool but I've never heard the album its from:
When it comes to pop punk, I like a lot of individual songs but not that many albums. For example, I like The Anthem by Good Charlotte. Brings me back to high school. I know I've listened to whatever album that's on but I cannot name the album off the top of head. Same thing with a couple Sum 41 songs. Anyway, American Idiot kicks ass. I'd probably go with that. However, Wikipedia lists Jimmy Eat World as pop punk. Bleed American is very high on my list, but I never thought of JEW as pop punk.
