This is a list of my favorite films and how well they correspond with great albums (and/or classical works). The films are listed in order by their rankings from my "Greatest Films of All Time" list. Underneath the film entries are albums (and/or classical works) that I feel best correspond to them. This can be used as both a game of amusement or interest as well as a guide to films and albums that share strong similarities and therefore can assist one's acclimation to and assimilation of each. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE WELCOME.

EQUIVALENCE RATINGS: To the right of the corresponding albums, you will see assigned scores (out of 15). These reflect how closely the work corresponds to the film (15/15 being very close). None of them are truly 100% exact in how closely they correspond, but a 15/15 would be about as close as can reasonably be expected.

(1) The first number is scored by how closely the album corresponds to the film in relation to EMOTIONAL/CONCEPTUAL CONTENT, with a 5 being as close as one can reasonably expect.

(2) The second number is scored by how closely the album corresponds to the film in relation to PACING, RHYTHM, MOMENTUM AND STRUCTURAL ARC, with a 5 being as close as one can reasonably expect.

(3) The third number is scored by how closely the album corresponds to the film in relation to OVERALL QUALITY/RATING, with a 5 being within 0.2 of the same rating (when comparing between my "Greatest Films" and "Greatest Albums" lists that feature more precise ratings). For every 0.3 in rating differential between the two, the score is dropped by 0.5 (from a possible 5 out of 5).

THERE IS NO LIMIT TO HOW MANY CORRESPONDING ENTRIES CAN BE ADDED UNDER EACH FILM, excepting the requirement that the corresponding album must score at least 10/15 to be included.

Can't say this makes any sense to me at all. Does anyone else (apart from AfterHours) understand this and care to share your take on it?

There are great films that share pretty strong resemblances to great albums. Doesnt have to be "intentionally" so by the artist/composer or director, and in all of these cases it probably isnt. But anyone familiar with, say, both Trout Mask Replica and Kusturica's Underground, for instance, can see the parallels in terms of emotional/thematic expression, in the extent and scope and wild/resltless pacing/momentum of their "story" arcs, and in their artistic quality -- consistency and degree thereof (provided one thinks similarly highly of both).

Or, Taxi Driver and Spiderland/Suicide...

Or, Tarkovsky's works (Stalker, Sacrifice) and late period Talk Talk (Laughing Stock, Spirit of Eden)

Or, 2001 and Irrlicht

Etc

The purpose is not to say "these are the 'same' works of art" (because theyre not). The purpose is both an amusing/interesting game of sorts that can also be used as a helpful tool in assimilating more art (films, music particularly, in this case). Ex: in any of these with an entry or more, one now has a film that shares similar themes/expressions as an album, and this can enhance one's efficiency of assimilation of each, just as understanding a director's work is enhanced by understanding those he is drawing from. Its just an additional tool. Just as understanding the surrealist, expressionist, dadaist paintings movements can have a great effect in assisting one's understanding the cinematic movements that followed suit... and so forth

Although I can't claim to totally get it either, this seems like a neat idea.

Also, I really like how the only 15/15 is Andrei Talktalkvsky's Laughing Stalker.

This is fascinating. I'm not quite sure I get it completely, but it's just interesting anyway. I'm curious how you came up with the pairings.
But I would pair Nashville with...... The Nashville soundtrack album!!! Heh heh.

I made a chart along these lines a few years back which could use some updating, but here are the movie/album pairings that immediately spring to mind.

Pulp Fiction - Quentin Tarantino (1994)
Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys (1989)

Jacob's Ladder - Adrian Lyne (1990)
Soundtracks For The Blind - Swans (1996)

No Country For Old Men - Joel Coen, Ethan Coen (2007)
Sings Reign Rebuilder - Set Fire To Flames (2001)

Mulholland Drive - David Lynch (2001)
Tilt - Scott Walker (1995)

Interesting selections! I havent heard Set Fire to Flames but I would have to revisit those other albums/films to see how well I feel they compare and if I agree. I can immediately see some parallels off hand though.

Paul's Boutique is a good comparison to Pulp Fiction but might need a film more relentlessly wacky and "montage-driven" for a closer pair. Trainspotting and Mean Streets are two examples that seem (without analyzing it much) possibly even more apt than Pulp Fiction.

Been too long since I listened to Tilt so I cant compare with Mulholland right now, but an intriguing suggestion. Too long since Ive listened to Soundtracks + its been years since Ive seen Jacob's Ladder. These will get me thinking...

Re: coming up with pairings ... familiarity with the films/albums, evaluating and assimilating them for my lists, then comparing them as described in the ratings explanations atop this one

Yep, in a sense one could just say "the soundtracks" but 99% of the time these are much too abstract in relation to the cinematic content.
