one of the other finalists isn't online, but this one is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYKSRyW...RaK7x8eDcs 7

it's not uninteresting but it doesn't seem especially vital, and that guitar seems kind of corny. even if damn isn't the greatest, it doesn't seem like anyone was getting robbed here

Comments like that is why I would argue it is underrated (at least on websites like this and RYM) and am glad it won this award. Hundreds of better works in any given year? Cmon...that's a ridiculous statement.

TPAB is obviously more worthy of such an award if we're giving it to Kendrick, but still I'm glad DAMN won. If there is anyone out there who deserves to be the first hip-hop artist to win the award, it is Kendrick Lamar. So I am happy they at least got that right, even if they gave it to the wrong album in his discography. Some people still just refuse to accept that hip-hop is a form of higher art that can rival any genre in terms of creativity, I am glad the Pulitzer prize has moved on from this stupidity.

Nope, that's not the case but your sentiment is understandable. Though it certainly has its share of extraordinary albums, Hip Hop is still very far behind from rivaling the masterpieces of Classical, Jazz, and much of Rock, especially in terms of creativity and emotional/conceptual depth.

I do agree that TPAB was much better but Lamar is rather overrated in general (including TPAB, even though this is a very good album).

DAMN is a mediocre work and there are hundreds of albums/Jazz works/Classical works, any given year, that are better. It (honestly) wouldn't even make my top 30,000 works of art of all time, and doesn't deserve mention among the many great albums of Hip Hop. It was a very poor choice for the award and will not seem so substantial once Lamar's career is no longer being viewed through the prism of its current hype-machine-spin-cycle.

Anyway, obviously you don't have to agree with me, but that is my opinion and conclusion after extensively listening to lots of Rock history (and offshoots), Classical history, Jazz history, and so forth. I am not biased towards Hip Hop (it has several works I consider great/amazing), but there is no question that it still has work to do if we are to legitimately compare its qualitative output to that of Classical, Jazz and the greatest works of Rock.

Adam Neely, a great music YouTuber, uploaded a video explaining a common criticism about the award, that it's always behind the trends and serves more as a kind of lifetime achievement. It seems even jazz was kind of put aside until the 90s.

Yikes. Maybe the most overrated album I've ever heard. On any given year there are hundreds of better works across Classical, Jazz, Rock, etc. But before hearing about this I didn't even know they were handing this out in music, so...

Do you pay attention to lyrics? I know it's a thing Scaruffi admits to, and it's probably why he doesn't seem all that enamored by hip-hop.

Kendrick Lamar's greatest strength is emotional and conceptual depth. In my opinion he's unparalleled in his genre. But here it's largely in the lyrics, as per the nature of the genre. If that hamstrings the genre in relation to your criteria, then I'd say that's a flaw in the criteria, not the genre.

DAMN is not nearly as expressive instrumentally as TPAB but if I was to give one criticism of its conceptual through-lines is that they are bordering on overcooked. Themes of religious guilt and sin, both individual and, alarmingly, collective and racial, are expressed in a way rarely seen in the genre and indeed mainstream music.

I'm not saying it's a great album, or even significant in a broad historical sense, but to claim that there are hundreds of superior musical works in any given year, especially in recent years, is something I can't fathom if my understanding of your own criteria is correct.

You dont have a clue, obviously, and havent explained a damn thing since you arrived on this site. Just random assertions, carps and denigrations that seem to mean little-to-nothing and have no context or explanation that I've seen.
