Just saw "Widows" a couple days ago, and I was very impressed. Pretty much all of what Skinny said was spot on.

Here's one gripe I would have though, which could catch me some flak. Spoilers (but not really I saw it coming a mile away).

The way in which their son died felt tacked on. This was not a movie about police brutality. Having the cops be the reason for the their son's death pushes the blame on the police instead of on Neeson's character. The death was the central conflict in Davis' and Neeson's relationship (besides the criminal activity), so it would have made more sense to have had some rival gang gun him down when they recognized his car or something. I think that just because it's the current political climate in America that Mcqueen added it on. In a movie that is already conceptually and thematically convoluted, this felt like shoehorned in discourse.

I saw Widows yesterday and Skinny's analysis was pretty accurate. Great film.

As for Rocka's plot issue, I agree that point could've been stronger, and I agree with Rocka's suggestion on how that could've been better scripted. But it was such a minor plot point, I don't think it brought the movie down by any means.

On another note, I thought our friend from Windsor would have reacted to Sunday night's post regarding Roma's Oscar campaign, haha.

(haven't lived there in a while). I'm actually living in Mexico City right now, and Roma's playing on screens... well... almost everywhere. It's massive. So many posters you'd think it's a Marvel film. Almost every show across the city is sold out until December 14th (Netflix day).

It actually began playing here early-September in some smaller theatres that I think are run by people who personally know Cuaron. The reception's been ecstatic.

The Oscars are looking like A Star Is Born Vs Roma Vs Green Book at this point. Bit of a loose year. The fact Roma could pull this off is kinda exciting, but I can't help but feel the Oscars will side with Cooper. Haven't seen The Favourite yet, but man am I looking forward to it.

That's why I said "from Windsor." Seems like you've moved six times in the past two years, haha. I think I've seen you list France and Spain at some point.

Anyway, that's great that Roma is a smash hit in Mexico, but that's kinda to be expected since it's the director's home country. As for here in the states, it can only be a box-office hit if Netflix gives it a chance with a wider release, and there's a big enough audience for it. We'll see what they do. My guess is Netflix is gonna keep Roma pretty limited theatrically until Dec 14, but still wider than all their prior films. And I agree the Academy is more likely to go with A Star is Born (and I haven't seen either film). English-language musical vs. foreign-language anything...history is not on Roma's side. But I appreciate that Netflix is giving it a shot by pushing it harder in theaters than all their prior films. Hopefully they do more of that in the future.

Lastly, check out The Favourite and Widows. Both good.

Yeah, I've been hopping around for a bit... been in Mexico the past few months though. It's been cool. Great place.

And the Cannes vs Netflix case becomes a little more prominent with this decision. The only reason Roma wasn't in competition at Cannes was specifically because Netflix didn't want to release it in theatres, so clearly there's been some talks at HQ about distribution models.

A Star Is Born def landed above my expectations. It feels like a big film, you know? Crazy confident for a debut directing/acting pair (albeit still a very experienced duo). Cooper's work behind the camera is genuinely impressive, and it's my favourite role I've seen him take on. A year back I figured it'd be a mess for sure, but it comes together quite nicely. Music's not half-bad either. Can't really say it has many faults, but unless you count excessive vulgarity, it lacks a little left-fieldism. The first half in particular is surprisingly strong, and Sam Elliott gets some great (but limited) screen time. It's rather tame and standard compared to The Shape of Water, Moonlight or Birdman, but I'm leaning towards the Academy going for it over Roma.

Being said, I think the Academy's doing ok right now. Ten years ago I don't think Roma would've stood a chance, and something like Green Book would basically have it bagged. The fact it's in discussion is pretty cool.

Golden Globe noms are announced tomorrow (I believe), so that'll probably solidify a few things. A Star Is Born somehow slipped into drama opposed to a musical, but whatever (it's kinda on a line in-between). Hoping to see Ethan Hawke and Hugh Grant get deserving noms... not sure if they'll make it to the Oscars. It's been a good year for 'smaller' films.

Widows and First Reformed shut out, ugh. What else? The GGs aren't a clear indicator of what will be nominated for the big awards, but they're still somewhat foreshadowing. I don't know. Glancing over these noms and what they may suggest for the next round, I find myself more estranged from these award shows every year. Are the awards changing or am I changing? Never mind, let's not talk about that. Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman are nominated for the same award. Wait, let's not talk about that either. It's too sickening. Oh and A Star is Born isn't a musical. If this list of noms was published by The Onion, I would've believed it was a joke and laughed my ass off. But no, this is actually for real.
