I have plenty of albums in my collection with female vocals on (eg. Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Kanye West etc...) but I think the only album in my chart with exclusively female vocals is Pure Heroine by Lorde.

Can anyone recommend me some decent female artists? I'm currently working my way through Homogenic by Bjork and I'm liking what I hear so far, and I've tried HAIM's Days Are Gone but I'm really not keen on that.

Anyone got some more suggestions?

Thanks Very Happy

I have some. In fact, I can't wait to be able to do my own custom charts on the website in order to do one of my favourite albums by female singer-songwriters, because I think there are a lot of great ones that don't always get the love they deserve. And yeah, Homogenic is a wonderful album.

My suggestions:

Blue by Joni Mitchell (which happens to be my favourite album of all time)

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Drive...iona Apple

Fever Ray by Fever Ray

Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman

Strange Mercy by St. Vincent

Art Angels by Grimes

Tapestry by Carole King

Ys by Joanna Newsom

Let England Shake by P.J. Harvey

Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush

Exile In Guyville by Liz Phair

I guess that's enough Very Happy

Also, if you liked Pure heroine, you should give Melodrama a listen if you haven't already.

If you're into prog at all you've gotta check out Renaissance.

Annie Haslam is the vocalist and her voice is simply stunning. First time I heard her it blew me away.

And as far as hip hop goes there are many femcees in the game worth checking out.

Here's a couple to start off with:
Kollage by Bahamadia
The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill

If you're into more modern stuff too you can try out Rapsody or SZA.

i'm only counting artists that are either female solo artists or groups where a *majority* of the members are female.

01 Rhythm Nation 1814 by Janet Jackson

02 Live Through This by Hole

03 janet. by Janet Jackson

04 Days Are Gone by Haim

05 Blacklisted by Neko Case

06 Control by Janet Jackson

07 Heartthrob by Tegan And Sara

08 Back To Black by Amy Winehouse

09 If It Was You by Tegan And Sara

10 Haunted by Poe

(This does not count 2018 albums. If so, the new Kacey Musgraves would have a shot at this top 10.)

I just created a "favorite female albums" chart.

Wow, I'm suprised no one has brought up Sleater Kinney yet. If you don't know Carrie Brownstien from Portlandia does both guitar and vocal work! I'm at work so I'll think of suggestions through the day. Definently give Melodrama, YS and Blue a listen like our rad members suggested Smile

Nico - Chelsea Girl
PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?
Cocteau Twins - Heaven & Las Vegas
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Juju

My other choices such as Blue and Ys have already been mentioned Smile

Edit: also remembered Anna Von Hausswolff - Dead Magic, half of Dead Can Dance songs have female vocals, and some of other dream pop stuff like Beach House is entirely female vocals

A lot of my favorite albums are by female artists. There's a few contemporary ones that I like, but most of my favorite female artist albums are fairly old. I'm just going to put the top 10 that come up in my charts.

Tapestry by Carole King

The Hissing Of Summer Lawns by Joni Mitchell

Eat To The Beat by Blondie

So Tonight That I Might See by Mazzy Star

Radio Ethiopia by Patti Smith Group

Pearl by Janis Joplin

The Pink Opaque by Cocteau Twins

Nightclubbing by Grace Jones

Flex by Lene Lovich

Anthology by The Supremes

No Secrets by Carly Simon

Stateless by Lene Lovich
