So here's one to ponder:

Group G matchup between Belgium and England. The winner of the match finishes first in Group G. As an England fan, this is what I noticed:

If England wins, they must play the 2nd place team in Group H. That puts them on the same side of the bracket as Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, France, Uruguay & Mexico. Quite the murderers row (even if some are under-performing).

If they lose, they must play the 1st place team in Group H. That puts them on the same side of the bracket as Spain, Russia, Switzerland, Croatia, Denmark & Sweden. Much less daunting.

Personally, I want England to always play to win and maintain good form & momentum. However, I can see how strategically it would be an advantage to play on the easier side of the bracket. What have the pundits been saying in England or Belgium?

Thoughts?

I don't think these things ever work (unless we're talking completely dominant teams, like US basketball team at Olympics). England can realistically crash out to Columbia in the next round, and I don't think the gap between, say, Sweden and Brazil is that big. Elimination games are an entirely different kind of beast.

True. ...but you really got the idea that neither Belgium or England was dying to win that game.

Colombia could be a problem for England, but I like England's chances of advancing. This is already better than the awful 2014 group stage collapse.

France totally deserves to win this match. I feel bad for Messi, but the rest of his team looks old and slow. (...and Di Maria loves to simulate).

Go France.

Neymar's theatrics are awful, and it's starting to play against him. In the game against Mexico, the Mexican defenders roughed up Neymar (contact behind the play, after the ball was played, holds, pulls, pushes) knowing that the refs would ignore his attempts to draw fouls. That 'cleat on the ankle incident' was intentional, and the guy knew that Neymar's response would just add to his lack of credibility. The irony is that his theatrics now mean he's more likely to get fouled. It's a shame - you want world-class talent to be allowed to play...

Yeah, Neymar's a talented player, no doubt, but he's also everything people make fun of about football. Ridiculous.

Anyway, Japan V Belgium was phenomenal and easily my favourite game of the cup.

And yet nothing has been done by any means of arbitrary to stop this huh? Neymar theatrics are awful, but when robben was stompped by Melo In '10 and he made all that drama (which he did again in 14 against mexico) the press didn't went killing on him right? and both were rewarded with a red and yellow card + penalty in this order. and with neymar's case, will his lack of credibility be an excuse for referees to not apply a fucking red card to a mexican player who sttomped on his foot (or ankle). Where is VAR in these times? Because it is used for red cards, it is one of its applications. Let's see how he behaves atempting to dive fouls knowing that he has a yellow card and might be out on any game that comes.

Anyways we are through, I seriously hope he steps up his game, which I think he has been doing since the cup started, and also hope coutinho pick up the pace which he lost in the last game.

Quite the drama between England and Colombia earlier today, although it sometimes looked more like wrestling than football. England v. Sweden in the quarter final, which on paper always has England the favorites. Of the big football nations, Sweden has generally performed well against England though. Anything could happen in that game, as in the rest of the tournament. So many of the big nations already out.

Not good for work moral when there are games taking up 4 hours of every day.
