I think we're pretty close to finalising the points system for the new ranks. I'm just wondering if people want to keep the same names, or change them?

Just to re-list what we have at the moment:

0 posts: [Nothing]
5 posts: Silver
10 posts: Gold
30 posts: Platinum
50 posts: Diamond
100 posts: Famous
250 posts: Superstar
500 posts: Legend

At the moment, the names aren't very contiguous and I quite like the idea of changing them. For those new to the site, a few years ago we had a similar brainstorm, and that thread might be useful to refer to to pick up any ideas.

I quite like the idea of a 'career', where you start off as a garage musician or something and end up doing stadiums. Something like this (but needs tweaking):

Level 1: Air Guitarist
Level 2: Strummer
Level 3: Garage
Level 4: Club
Level 5: Famous
Level 6: Superstar
Level 7: Legend
Level 8: Demigod

Another idea, maybe there could be two or three different ladders, and you could pick the 'theme' that you want to use.

Anyway, just opening this up to see if anyone has any thoughts or ideas.

Some see being number 1 better than 10. Bands/artists want to be number 1 and they want their albums to be number 1, not 8 or 10. Athletes want to be number one or finish 1st or come in 1st. Any nonnumeric names you give will need a legend for interpretation. If you have more than one ranking scheme it will be confusing and make the ranking scheme meaningless.

Yes, but that doesn't give any room for expansion. If new levels were added further down the line, they'd have to be zero or negative and that doesn't sound right.

Yes - there's a *draft* page here (functionality is not currently tied to your level, but it will be when this system goes live).

Everything will be tied to your level number. If I am a Level 2 "Strummer" (or whatever the level is eventually called) and someone else is a Level 2 something else, they will both have the same functionality. The name is just a label for the level.

Do we need expansion? Do we need to move the finish line? What is higher than Nirvana?

I never thought originally that anyone would make more than 100 posts... Mr. Green

It's far better to have a system that is extensible (even if it never has to change).

Maybe we could have band names that are superlatives for labels, e.g.:
Nirvana
Supremes
Tops
Paragons

i wouldn't mind it named in forms of musical skill such as virtuoso etc. Naming after bands or popularity will probably be disliked by certian members though
