Larks' Tongues In Aspic by King Crimson
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I was expecting some over the top prog thing and was presently surprised by a performance more akin to Sigor Ros than Rush or Yes. Some very beautiful arrangements, with some awesome dynamics and melody/rhythms. Solid 85.

2. Metallica - Metallica... I feel there's two camps. Those who like music for music and those who are purists.

And Their Refinement Of The Decline by ...Of The Lid

Well that was long. At first I was paying close attention and sort of getting into the drone and the volume dynamics and other little nuances but after a while that became a bit samish, so I then tried to do nothing and just let myself get caught up in the music, half meditating, half drifting off. That worked for about half an hour or so, but it never really caught me to drag me in, and I had had enough of that. Background music while not doing much didn't work out either, so I finished off with background music to household chores (luckily with a length of two hours there was plenty of opportunity to experiment with different listening styles). At least that was productive. Very Happy
So I think one of my problems with ambient music is I don't know how or when to listen to it to get the most out of it. Individually there is usually not much wrong with each piece but as a whole thing I struggle to connect and enjoy it. Maybe if this was a 30-40 minute album it would be better for me and I would score it higher, as it is it gets a 6.5/10.

I really enjoyed the Caravan album Seth.

Hatred, Passions & Infidelity by Diamond D

Well, it's a DITC album, so it's always going to have great beats. Diamond D is joined by a large cast of characters including Phife Dawg, Busta Rhymes, Sadat X, and Big L. It was a good, chill album.

Haha, Purplepash, I wish I could just pick the albums for you,* because I think I could find ones that you would like. To be clear, I don't listen to the whole thing at once either. In fact, that one is really in the "sleeping/reading" category. Some ambient can listened to actively, but with others it will only exacerbate boredom. Very Happy

With that said, Chill Out by The KLF can be found on youtube only. I think. It's easily one of my favorites, and it clocks in at only 44 minutes! It's a totally different concept and execution. It's also one of the best concept albums I've heard as well.

* I changed the order of my albums. Go ahead and change the ones you can pick from for next time.

In The Land Of Grey And Pink by Caravan
Yeah, I can see myself getting into this. It actually has some solid rhythm and then additionally goes places without shredding or mindless shitting. 85 to 90 for sure. I dig the "70s" soft rock style I feel Beck perverted and perfected with Sea Change and in a way this actually "did it first" by perverting the "correct" definition of soft rock to include a whole lot more arrangementwise. Anyway I should stop talking.

Chill Out by The KLF

This is probably the best ambient album I've ever listened to. First off it had the advantage of me already being predisposed to liking The KLF. I was fascinated by The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu in the late 80's, and I love The White Room, and own it on CD, as well as the compilation Shag Times. Secondly I think I got the set and setting right for listening to it. I had had a big weekend going to gigs two night in a row, and listened to this on the way to work the next day, while the sun was coming up (dark when I left home - light when I got to work). This just seemed to fit this album, which from reading up about it before I listened to it, is a loose concept album about both a road trip, and that after-rave feeling. Thirdly the music kept me entertained the whole time, with interesting samples used effectively. Impresssive, and worth mentioning, is that the album is basically one continuous piece of music, and apparently was recorded in a complete take. If they made a mistake while recording they had to start the whole thing again. 8/10 and 22/36 for 1990.

I think I am going to go with something heavy from your list Seth Laughing Let's see what Neurosis is like.

Realms 'N Reality by Cella Dwellas

If Mobb Deep were from Flatbush instead of Queens. OK, it's not quite that good, but it's really good 90s New York hip hop, that, like Mobb Deep, kind of occupies it's own space. It doesn't really follow any of the major movements going on at that time, and it's well executed. Would recommend for hip hop heads.

Manuel Gottsching is the next one I would suggest listening to. You can find it here.

Before I go on to post about Rammstein, Pash Chill Out from The KLF came out in 1990 not 1999. Just want to point that out. Now onto to the album.

(1)

I realistically do find this album to being pretty good in a lot of respects but I'm not crazy about it. And the weird part about it is I trying to figure out why I'm not losing my shit. If I would give an estimate of what could be going on would be how some people would call this heavy. And while there are heavy moments, it's more grand in its sound. Which makes me realize that if this was more grand and somewhat panoramic with its sound and gave me a more compelling and enveloping high, I would have graded it higher. Still a good record but not one of the best for 2001.

Grade:75

E2-E4 by Manuel Göttsching

Another single continuous piece of music. The main repetitive beat throughout the whole piece was good enough for me to lose myself in a little bit at times, while the spacey, echoey sounds gave me something interesting to listen for the first half. Then the guitar work kicked in in the second half and I actually really got into that. Overall it's a bit too club house influenced (or influential?) for me to ever be a favourite but I did admire and enjoy it. I'm giving it an 8/10, and 16/25 for 1984.

Tenacious D Luigii. For a novelty album it's surprisingly good and re-listenable, and it was a blast seeing Tenacious D live.
