The Argument by Fugazi

I can't put my finger on why exactly, but this is easily the best Fugazi record I've ever listened to. I think BayState said something about Fugazi I agreed with (something like they are highly respected, but doesn't click), but this record clicked well... not sure if I was ready to receive it or if it really is a better record by them, but easily an 85-90 for me.

RE: Smile Sessions - yeah, there's a few quotes from Brian Wilson I'm referring to from his perspective... the works themselves, that is indeed debatable. I hadn't read this one, it was another one about the recording of Strawberry Fields Forever that I was referring to (they did it), but did find this quote from Brian Wilson:
Quote:
Wilson told a Rolling Stone interviewer in 1987 that when he started Smile, he was "trying to beat" the Beatles; when asked whether Smile would have topped his rivals' subsequent release, Wilson replied: "No. It wouldn't have come close. Sgt. Pepper would have kicked our ass."
Having said that, I've gotten in trouble for quoting Wikipedia in the past (secondary sources are always the best ones, right?)... but it's on the internet! Laughing

Is that there 1994 album? If so, I'll give it a listen somepoint in the future. But I do know that Double Negative is a record that morphs their usual sound with glitchy electronics and expansive ambient. That might be the reason I loved it.

If there was a complaint I could have with this album, it would how the demonic vocals can get loud. And if your not in the mood or having a headache, I could see that being a problem. However, that is the only thing I could think of. Because there is a lot I love about this. For one, those demonic vocals are demonic. They sound hellish and fits the vibe of the record. As well as the vibe was grand. Then I have to point out that the record flows flawlessly. Like if you told me there was one 40 minute track, I'd believe you. Hell when I realized that I was on the last track I didn't realize that much time passed away. Otherwise, I would recommend this to music fans that want an interesting take of metal in the 2000's. And I do want to give this another listen. I don't know when, but I do know I want to give it another spin soon. Grade wise 95 but it could be a 100 later on. Maybe.

Alvvays by Alvvays

A consistent, nice enough album with no low points, but no high points either. An easy listen that unfortunately didn't really interest me much (apart from the bonus track that's on the spotify version: Underneath Us - that was the most interesting song). Not really my thing. 7/10, and 58/68 for 2014.

Luigii: Southern Rock Opera is my #2 album for 2001, but I'm a sucker for rock operas, concept albums, and great story telling.

Discipline by King Crimson
The first track got me on a Talking Heads vibe. Overall I liked this, but I also got a "trying" too hard vibe from the record at times... instead of using art to tell you what feelings one should have about inner city stuff, they just tell you that's the point... idk, for artistry sake that loses points for me, even if musically they are clearly fantastic musicians and it clearly shows on this record. 75-80, leaning to the 80, even if i didn't dig that about this record.

The Creators Have A Master Plan by The Creators

Man, this album started off so strong, and the first song "Don't Give a F***" was great. However, I noticed that the album was from the UK and the MC on that song did not sound British at all. Most of these tracks have a featured artist, so I'm unsure of who the "Creators actually are. Some of the MC's are decent and one or two are cornballs. Beats were on point though, and it clocks in at a quick 30 minutes with way to many skits for an album this short.

Seth, your list is almost all metal, and my favorite out of those is probably 'Leviathan' by Mastodon.

The Cenubites- The Cenobites L.P.
Dysfunkshunal Familee- Mixed Emotions
Funky DL- Classic Was the Day
Crustified Dibbs- Night of the Bloody Apes
Da Grassroots- Passage Through Time
Da King & I- Contemporary Jeep Music
Darc Mind Symptomatic of a Greater Ill
Double XX Posse- Ruff, Rugged & Raw
Down South- Lost in Brooklyn
Dred Scott- Breakin' Combs

The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads ...king Heads

God damn, the Talking Heads COOKED live! This one is not quite as good as Stop Making Sense, but it's still phenomenal and probably better than any of their studio albums. There are several definitive versions of tracks on here. I listened to the original LP version, not the sprawling CD reissue on streaming. 4/5.

2. That Cenubites record is supposed to be good, so give it a try.

This album is quite an excellent take of southern rock. A genre I realize that I need to get more into. If there was a complaint, it would be some songs on a musical level don't hit me in a God Damn way which prevents me giving an even higher grade than a 90. But I still enjoyed it for the storytelling as well as hard hitting grooves. For anyone that wants a starter for southern rock, I'd listen to it. But I feel like if I go deeper, I would find something fascinating that could get a 100 from me. But I will come to that when it happens.

Curtis by Curtis Mayfield

I would like to like soul more than I do but I struggle to really enjoy it and it's more respect I have for it than anything else. I liked the funkier songs like the opener and Move On Up (which I recognised from Touch The Sky - I guess it's a shame that it's not the other way around). Lyrics were mostly decent though. I definitely prefer Superfly and I can only give this a 7/10. Not good enough to make my '70s chart but for now it can start at the bottom of my 1970 chart in 16th place.

Luigii there is not a lot I want to listen to from your list at the moment so I am going to give you one we have both already heard, but considering it's from a genre I'm not really into, yet I liked it quite a bit, it must be good and worth hearing again.

Happy Birthday to me. Now 24. Don't really feel it. Anyway.

(1)

Coming back to this again after a good while, I have to say I still love this album. Hell there is a part of me that want to give this a 100. From the variety of chilled and punchy tracks to how these tracks have a lot of groove but also the sound design of this album is quite rich. Has a lot of highlights from She's So to A Higher Place. Trying to think any complaints and it would probably be the beginning of the final track where one portion of that track thematically feels out of place. Otherwise for 2001, this is a top 10 contender for my overall best, and I would say top 5 for the canon. Grade:95

(2)
Pash, I don't know how you are with hip hop but you need to listen to Midnight Marauders.
