Interesting thoughts, and the albums definitely have a different tone. Rae was pioneering raw Mafioso rap on OB4CL, while MBDTF's maximalist nature is far from that. In general though, I'm not sure about a bold line between the artists. For instance, if you examine both of their lyrics on Gorgeous from MBDTF, the dynamic shifts. If anything, Kanye has a lot "more to say" lyrically.

More to say on that track? I agree, but it’s his song and Raekwon only gets one verse. I doubt he was as invested in that one verse as he was in his first album.

The Pearl by Harold Budd / Brian Eno / Daniel Lanois

I'm back!!!....sort of. Still a couple of days until I'm home but I'm at an air b'n'b with internet.
A pleasant, forgettable, background music album which isn't what I want from my listening experiences but I did get to play it during dinner around people who don't like music and usually complain about what I play, without any complaints, and it even got a compliment. 6.5/10 and 24/26 for 1984 (in between a couple of Swans albums).

Welcome to the game Jameth. I'm giving you one of my long time all time favourites. A bit of an acquired taste in my opinion rather than a first time grab you album but you may as well start now.

Cień Chmury Nad Ukrytym Polem by Stara Rzeka

This is badass, and all of the elements that I wanted to be in a Psych Rock/ Black Metal outfit are present, and it is executed very well. This is the kind of quality that I have come to expect from the Polish "Instant Classic" records. Check out their records if you ever see one; they're a trip.

Our very own Anti has this as one of his greatest, so let's show him some love.

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

I was feeling let down while listening to “Disorder”, which sounds like a Ramones song with every ounce of life sucked out of it. That didn’t last long, fortunately, the rest of the album does a much better job of brooding. This album is rich with atmosphere and mood, and the murky, claustrophobic production helps to trap you inside. Otherwise, it’s like Purple said, it’s a hard album to judge after one listen. The lyrics might help me suss it out more, but I rarely pay much attention to them first listen.

I’m listening to Closer now (before it makes an appearance in my list), and I’m wondering why it’s not ranked ahead of Unknown Pleasures. Brilliant album.

(2)

Chief, feast on Black Vomit.

(3)

From the overall chart:

16. London Calling - The Clash
20. The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths (possibly listened and forgotten)
24. Is This It - The Strokes
35. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan
37. The Joshua Tree - U2
40. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
43. (What’s The Story) Morning Glory - Oasis
46. To Pimp A Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar
47. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not - Arctic Monkeys
50. Grace - Jeff Buckley

The back end is about to start creeping out of the top 50...woo.

Black Vomit by Wolf Eyes & Anthony Braxton

The best Wolf Eyes record so far is a live set with the legend himself. You can guess what kind of music is on this album.

Looks like this chart is another good reference.

London Calling by The Clash

I knew going in that this was supposed to be an eclectic album, which I appreciate, as I’ve always suspected that punk works better as a lens through which other styles can be shone, rather than as a singular ambition. I also had high expectations, given how sublime “London Calling” is and how highly regarded this album is. I expect the 16th overall album to be loaded with bad-to-the-bone tracks. Not so much the case. The first two after “London Calling” are good, as are “The Guns Of Brixton”, “The Card Cheat”, “Lover’s Rock”, and “Train In Vain”. Good, not great...the other twelve songs seem to cling to tolerability, but there’s some sort of blandness that pervades the album.

Don’t know what else to say...pretty deflating listen. Onward, I suppose.

(2)

Chief, explore the Basements Of Hell.

Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell by Killing Joke

Jesus, look at that cover. Shocked (A painting from a Russian artist named Viktor Safonkin).

Killing Joke is one of those rare bands that have been able to keep making great albums into the 21st century; with Jaz Coleman being one of the main reasons. This album is an assault of growls, heavy riffage, and pounding percussion. It's pretty repetitive at an hour in length, but when it rocks this much, then who really cares?

(Listen to if you like KJ already or dig Motorhead; he kind of channels Lemmy a bit on this album).

Here's a list of "Heavy" albums.

Alright Jameth, let's keep this going. Listen to Jeff Buckley next.

Little John - Give The Youth A Try
Astral Matrix- Secret Broadcast
Eskaton - 4 Visions
The Ullulators - Beyond The Gates Of Ull
Bel Canto- Birds of Passage

And with that, it is a slam dunk for this prog act. Now is it better than their debut? No. But they still made an album that is just wonderful. Like with this and the few records back in 2000 that are similar in sound, I need to listen to more prog albums. And in a lot of ways, the reason why I love this album is the same of loving there 2000 record. Able to change genres while just able to put a smile on my face. Believe me, I could go on how wonderful this record is, but that would lead to a lot of paragraphs and I don't have that time. Grade:95 could be a 100 but more leaning to a 95.

Come on Chief. Really!?! I was about to give Jameth TPAB. Sad Listen to Eskaton.

I wish he did, so I could remove this target from my back. Assuming I don’t leave a scathing review when it’s Kendrick’s turn. Razz

////

I’d just like to add that I’ve listened to The Clash, Sandinista!, and Combat Rock after London Calling, and Sandinista! and Combat Rock absolutely wipe the floor with London Calling. I don’t know, maybe it’s the production on LC that bothers me, and I should spin some live versions.
