I went with both selections, because why not

The Milk-Eyed Mender by Joanna Newsom
This shit slaps. You can definitely hear that it's her first, it's a bit rough around the edges and the songwriting is much more straightforward than her later work, but DAMN are the songs great. In fact, the more pop-oriented songwriting suits her really well. Peach, Plum, Pear and Sprout & The Bean were the two songs I've known from before, and The Roots have sampled The Book Of Right-On on their song The Book On (insert incredibly cool Chief sampling story), but tbh every song is a highlight. And it's a wonderfully constructed album, it starts with several lovely acoustic/harp songs, then it gets much more uplifting on the piano-led Inflammatory Writ, and immediately after there's a ballad This Side Of The Blue. This first side flows so well! The second side is just as good, with Peach, Plum, Pear and Three Little Babies being my favourites. Ys is maybe still slightly better, but Milk-Eyed Mender gets a comfortable 9/10

Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts by ...in' Hearts
I'm on a really hot streak, cause this one was just as excellent. Avant-folk, alternative folk, psychedelic folk, gothic country, whatever. But I absolutely love it, and I've bought it on bandcamp faster than CGD can start a new tournament. Graceless Lady is a must hear, a solid 10/10 song. And like on that Newsom album, every song is a winner and an album itself is quite an experience. 9/10

Parachutes by Coldplay

Coldplay are one of those uncommon bands that all five of us in my family listen to, we all have Coldplay songs on our playlists, but none of us really listen to their albums much or profess to love the band. For me they are a song band, rather than an album band. Of their albums I've listened to there are some great songs on them but as a whole album I'm not really interested... a lot of middling songs that don't do a lot for me. Parachutes is no different....a few good songs early on, Yellow is a classic that I love, and a good closer (not the secret track), but the rest is just okay. The good is good enough for the album to get 7.5/10 from me, and 23/34 for 2000.

Okay Zep, let's see what you think of Jens Lekman.

Saturation II by Brockhampton

Man I really liked some tracks off this, much more so than the original Saturation album I did listen to. Jello is a track name I remember liking a lot, but there's actually quite a few. And it was a pretty consistent record, even if for me I could put it on shuffle and the record would all sound the same to me, reimphasizing it's about the single tracks and isn't really something I'd regard as a "great album - cover to cover" kind of thing. Still thinking of giving it a higher rating than I would - 4 or 85. If nothing else it inspired me to put on my hip-hop mix today.

2. Well thanks Purplepash for checking out my list... Accelerate is a quick listen and I dig the energy and seeing as you already are an R.E.M. fan, maybe you'll like it or hate it.

Night Falls Over Kortedala by Jens Lekman
It's a nice way to close Hayden's chart. Absolutely lovely instrumentals, and even though I'm not so crazy about his voice or even some songs, it was a very enjoyable listen. Lyrics are just as sugary as the music, the production is brilliant and I can see myself playing this around Christmas time. 8/10

(2)
Wow that's a lot of great albums. Some of my metal favourites too. There are some difficult listens in there, but try Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath. King Diamond-led pioneers of black metal imagery and lyrics, and this is one of their two classics. It's a fairly easy listen too, great Danish catchy 80s metal.

Hayden's chart was excellent, let's see if this one rivals it.

Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends by Coldplay

Just as I was starting to get into music, one of my then-friends mocked me for putting a Coldplay song on a mix CD. Nothing could possibly be less cool. My young impressionable self took it to heart. But once I was thinking for myself musically, the Coldplay sound was less interesting than lots of other artists, so I didn't give them another chance. While they may not be the coolest band, and I wouldn't call myself a fan, I have been pleasantly surprised by each of their three albums I've heard during this game. The sound of this album album is lush and well-developed. There are also several great songs, although the songwriting quality is not consistent, and the first title track is overplayed/overrated. Brian Eno did a good job of bringing the best out of a solid band. 3.5/5.

2. I love this album, and praised it in my first BEA post.

Accelerate by R.E.M.

Yes, I've been a big fan of R.E.M. for a long time but there's still a few albums of theirs I haven't heard yet. So thanks for choosing this. This is very good. Typical R.E.M sound but a little bit rockier and noisier than the previous few albums had been before this, and I like that. Good solid quality songs all around, although with no real highlights that their albums usually have a few of. 8/10, and 9/18 for 2008.

I'm choosing Księżyc - Księżyc for you Rocka.

Księżyc by Księżyc

Before listening: I've been wanting to listen to this one for awhile; from what I sampled

After listening: Welp, this ones going straight onto my chart. Holy nuts, what a great album. It's able to balance so many things at once while remaining one cohesive and focused vision. Medieval vocals, minimal synths, saxophone interludes? That shouldn't work so well, but in this case it does. Thanks Poland!

Purple, Phish aren't meant for the studio, but it's not everyday I get to recommend one of their albums. Farmhouse is one of their more straightforward albums.

Don't Break The Oath by Mercyful Fate

Probably the best black metal or even metal album I've listened to this whole game. At times I thought it was the Neil Young vocal style for metal hehe... Anyway these guys actually have some rhythm and tone I enjoyed. I think I heard three words, so lyrical content I've yet to review. Only thing I'm afraid of is it will ruin my opinion of it.

I'm New Here by Gil Scott-Heron
A pretty unique record. A bit short, but the quality is high throughout. I could do without 1 or 2 of those interludes, but even those 10 second clips are pretty intriguing. It's very much a personality driven album, and the circumstances around its release as well as Gil Scott-Heron's life are a pretty good read. Basically every song is a standout, but Bill Callahan written I'm New Here is my favourite. Absolutely loved it, 8.5 or 9/10
