Dub Roots by Prince Douglas

Yeah, this is the good shit right here. I knew it would be, because JimmyDread has it highly ranked on his chart, and it did not dissapoint. That first track is about as good as it gets. Things don't die down from there either; it's a consistently good time throughout. Would recommend for anyone who hasn't heard, but wants to listen to more dub like me.

Down Colorful Hill by Red House Painters

I've gone from a 20 songs in 36 mins album to a 6 songs in 43 mins album. I'm only familiar with Mark Kozalek in his Sun Kil Moon incarnation, (although I did listen to Rollercoaster once in my pre BEA days and didn't think much of it) so it was weird hearing him actually singing instead of talking at me, with a band behind him instead of minimalistic guitar (of course the Jesu/Sun Kil Moon album had a band behind him as well but he was still talking at me - probably my favourite Sun Kil Moon album). Although I prefer his stories over the song lyrics here this was a decent album. He has a good enough singing voice - it surprisingly gave me a bit of a Galaxie 500 meets The Smiths vibe - and conveys emotion well. The first three songs are all starred here on BEA, but it was the second three songs that I liked the best, with Lord Kill The Pain my favourite from the album. 7.5/10 and 22/34 for 1992.

Listen to Fishmans Blue.

I took a different pee break this time... d'oh! (not on purpose... I got dehydrated I guess)

Midnight Ride by Paul Revere And The Raiders

Pretty average rock from this time. You got some fuzz bass, which I always dig, but the rest was pretty average. But... I've heard worse... like Three Dog Night or something. 3/75.

2. Let's go with American Football. I thought it was pretty ok - like if I hadn't gotten into Piebald in my teenage years, I probably would have gotten into these guys more.

98.12.28 男達の別れ [98.12.28 Otok...[Fishmans]

I mentioned in my Talking Heads review that I wasn't a big fan of live albums until recently, and even now I'm not sure I'm a fan of 2 hour live albums. Especially when I've only heard one of the songs on the album before (though, to be fair, in this case that song takes up a third of the album's run time). Let's start with that song first: I've never been a huge fan of Long Season and have been a bit perplexed at the love it gets. It's nice, but not revelatory. Interestingly, I think I enjoyed it more here than on its own. Somehow it works best as a 40 minute long coda than it does as a standalone album. Who would have guessed? The rest of this is all very pleasant even if there were no songs that were very memorable. There were a lot of great songs, but none that really stood above the others. That all added up to an album that didn't really feel 2 hours long. I'll be giving this one another listen at some point, but maybe after I've had some time to explore Fishmans discography more and get more acquainted with them.

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan

I haven't heard any of the albums on your list, but if I had to choose to listen to one it would be this one.

BEA's top 1000 albums:

429. Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) by Car Seat Headrest (I've heard the original)
479. Out of the Blue by Electric Light Orchestra
531. Tusk by Fleetwood Mac

552. The Kick Inside by Kate Bush
572. Lungs by Florence and the Machine
575. A Trick of the Tail by Genesis
577. The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
584. Chelsea Girl by Nico
585. Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers

American Football by American Football

A very mellow, slow album that shows remarkable restraint. Especially so on Honestly? which had a really nice build, and just as I expected it to explode it faded out. After that I knew if they didn't then they never would for the rest of the album. Not exactly my thing but I appreciated the artistry. The trumpet on the last song was unexpected and nice. 7/10, and 34/47 for 1999.

I'm sorry Blue, I'm guessing you didn't think much of the original but out of these choices I have to give you Twin Fantasy. It's my #1 album of 2018 and one of the rare times that I agree with the BEA consensus for a #1 album of the year. Maybe the updated version might be better for you, but no worries if it's not...CSH is not for everyone.

6 by Supersilent

This was a good fusion of jazz and ambient, which immediately reminded me of the handful of ECM records (it looks like 6 was actually distributed by ECM at some point) I’ve listened to. 6.1 is catchy and pretty hypnotic, and probably my top pick, even though I know some of the other tracks have more to offer. I had a harder time with the second half of the album, even though 6.4 seems popular with reviewers. Ah well.

I went back to look through ECM’s catalog, Chief, and it looks like I’ve found the vantage point from which you spotted the likes of Steve Kuhn and Steve Tibbetts. I’ve liked all the ECM releases I’ve heard (Music From Two Basses being my favorite), so I guess it’s a great spot to keep digging.

Wow Chief, I've actually heard one of the albums on your list. Assuming it's this album and not a more obscure album of the same name. If it is this one, it's one of my favorite emo albums. "Everyone is My Friend" is an absolute classic. If it's not this one listen to whatever it is because owls are my favorite bird.

Really digging this!

Plunge by Fever Ray

I had never heard an LP by The Knife or Fever Ray. This was a bit of an odd starting point, as it is the lowest rated of six studio efforts according to RYM, and fifth of six according to BEA. I did enjoy it. The instrumentation was very solid, although neither the songwriting nor the vocals left much of an impression. The lyrics that I picked up were at times blunt and edgy. A pretty good listen, but it's not going to make my yearly chart, let alone my decade chart. 3/5.

2. This is the only one of those I've heard, and I think it's pretty great:

Moby Grape by Moby Grape

3. BEA Overall:

202. AM - Arctic Monkeys
204. An Awesome Wave - ∆ (alt-J)
219. Random Access Memories - Daft Punk
221. Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek & The Dominos
229. Aja - Steely Dan
232. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
236. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
239. Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys
252. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull
261. Machine Head - Deep Purple

b) Tiny Mix Tapes Favorite 100 Music Releases of the Decade

Devil's Music by Nicolas Collins

I honestly don't know if everything I listened to was from this album, but I want to listen to whatever this guy has done. Occasionally incredible early glitch verging on plunderphonic madness. A live performance by the artist indicated that these are loops recorded on AM and FM radio broadcasts and subsequently de-tuned and manipulated in various ways. There's a slight Caretaker vibe on this that fans of that Kirby project may enjoy. Another one of his albums has a lot more reviews on RYM, so I'll have to give that a shot.

Baystate, I would go with Aja. One of Steely Dan's best offerings.

Marble Sky- The Sad Return

Pale Cocoon - Cocoon (繭)
Vanilla - Sweet Talk
Cardiacs - The Obvious Identity
Dave Burrell - Echo
Circus - Movin' On
Computer Music- (Various Artists--It's a Nonesuch records release)
