Before reviewing my next assigned album, the death metal landmark Left Hand Path, I need to take a detour. I drifted away from metal in the late 80s into the then truly exciting scene that was the American Underground. It was all about live shows for me back then and that was the scene I fit in with best. So join me in my music diary - The Mellow (Metal) Zone - if your curious about the evolution of the death metal scene in the late 80s- principally the Florida scene with bands such as Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary and probably more Death. lol.

Peace, brothers! \m/

In my never ending quest to listen to everything Mike Patton-related, here is an album that was produced on his Ipecac record label. This band had been around for years before, and I've never listened to them before, but it sounds exactly how I figured it would. Pitchfork described them as an "Italian No Wave Metal Band" and they also have hints of jazz thrown in there for good measure. This album can get really get grooving and sound incredible, but it can also sound a little clunky at times. Sometimes weird time signatures aren't used for a reason. A unique album that acutally got better throughout its runtime.

Jameth, my next pick would be Geogaddi; it's one of my favorites too.

Heldon - Électronique Guerilla
Cypher 7- Dead Drop
Robert John- Robert John
Nihonjin - Far Out
Witthüser & Westrupp ‎– Trips Und Träume
Justin Berkovi- After the Night
Benoit Widemann- Stress!
Benjamin Lew- Nebka
Murmuüre - Murmuüre
Surgeon- Basictonalvocabulary

New Ancient Strings by Toumani Diabate ...ke Sissoko

Impressive, gentle traditional harp duets from Mali. Not exactly my thing but I wasn't bored and the album flew by. I wouldn't mind this as background music at a wellness retreat or something like that...not that I would ever do something like that. 7/10, and 44/51 for 1999.

Definitely Nihonjin - Far Out next

The Kick Inside by Kate Bush

I listened to this twice over the past couple days. The first time I was really distracted and work and it flew by in what felt like 5 minutes. So I listened to it again to try to get more out of it. I've never been big on Kate Bush, but this is a very enjoyable album. It's incredibly lush and flows really well. Wuthering Heights is a great song. I'm not sure whether I like this more or less than Hounds of Love. The thing that's always made it hard for me to get into Bush is her orchestral / theatrical style, which is probably more pronounced on Hounds of Love. But Hounds of Love also feels more ambitious because of all the weird stuff that's on it. I think I'd give the edge to Hounds but I really need to try to get into more of her stuff.

Norman Fucking Rockwell! by Lana Del Rey

1.

The Gilded Palace Of Sin by The Flying ...o Brothers

I really didn't like the vocals at first on this record. I thought a little about The Grateful Dead with the guitar styles here/sometimes jammy feel. I was probably most impressed by that. And then there was some kind of unique effects used I was a bit surprised with for the time. I like The Grateful Dead because they got the folk side of things, but this swings a bit too country for my liking. 70/3 - the album name and band name were actually possibly cooler than the record itself... Laughing Pretty cool they covered Do Right Woman.

Nihonjin by Far Out

Great Psych-Rock album from early 70s Japan. If you like Floyd-like jammy prog and psych, then go ahead and give this a spin. Also, I can't help, but think of Spinal Tap when I look at this album cover. Smell the glove.

Cloud Nine is a cool Psychedelic-Soul album.

Geogaddi by Boards Of Canada

I went ahead and listened to Music Has The Right To Children first, and immediately dove into Geogaddi.

Not long after I reviewed Jeff Mills, I was pretty eager to listen to some top rated electronic albums. I started with Selected Ambient Works, which I expected to melt my face off, but instead, it discouraged me from moving on to Boards of Canada. That was a shame, because both of these albums are incredible. I don't know if it was an intentional artistic decision to take a stream-of-consciousness approach, but I love, love it. Even with the numerous silent pregaps, these albums are basically electronic fantasias. Very similar to Since I Left You...you feel like you're bopping through a sonic wonderland. There's a bit more bopping to be done with Music Has The Right...Geogaddi is definitely a moodier, more meditative expedition, but it never wanders through sinister or depressing territory.

Both these albums are debuting at #1 on my year charts, so they were desperately needed. My 1998 and 2002 charts are tiny, but if these albums ever manage to fall out of the top ten or even the top five for those years, something has gone very, very right.

Based on the title, this should either be extremely stimulating or extremely droll.
