A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead

A set of songs awash in strings and multi-tracking mayhem in an effort to inject them with life and mask the fact that they just aren't very good. They're all spiritless and utterly forgettable, and the band seems to just be going through the motions. I like their three album run from OK Computer to Amnesiac, but I just can't find any reason to care about this or any of their other albums.

1.

13 by Blur

This was noisier and more ambitious than I expected, and I really enjoyed it. There are plenty of musical ideas in these 67 minutes, and while they're not all great, quite a good share are. They're also executed with impressive instrumental chops. Tender and Coffee & TV both tower over the other tracks, and I really wish there were more songs like those, but this is still a fun and interesting ride from start to finish. Not sure if I like it more than Parklife, but it's better than any Gorillaz album. 4/5.

Schottische Symphonie / Requiem Of Art ...seph Beuys

I listened to this last night, but it's still resonating with me today. For how jarring some of the vocal sampling can be in this Musique Conrete/ Collage piece, it flows remarkably well from beginning to end with plenty of interesting textures to keep the listener interested.

Just like I want to see Jameth's next take on a contemporary album, I can't help but want to hear your thoughts on Toxicity. Twisted Evil

Heathered Pearls - Loyal

Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless

Well, it wasn’t my intention, but I guess it was my expectation. I wanted to give the 2010’s a fairer shake than what I have given them and I was hoping against hope that I’d love something. But, this 2010’s stuff, man. It’s so middle-of-the-road and corny. I think the best thing you can get out of music is catharsis, and this music seems to avoid it.

1. Close to the Edges - Yes

I am not one to say no to some prog-rock, but sometimes i feel it gets somewhat complicated just for the sake of it. Yes is certainly guilt of this, but i find that they manage to balance it out as soon as singing is involved, with some more agreeable chord progression. Some transitions are definitly neck-breaking though. I had to double-check a few times that i didn't skip parts of a song. For a prog-rock album, it is surprisingly short though.
At his best, it is really epic, at its worst it is a self-indulgent mess. Still a good album, but i'm not the biggest fan of it. I might get into it more by listening to it, it is the type of music that takes a while to digest.

2. Akio Suzuki, Aki Onda- ma ta ta bi seems really intersesting, in fact i think i will listen to it as well.

54. Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins

Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit

Classified as psychedelic rock on RYM, but it's got a bit of a bunch of genres too it - some blues rock, folk rock, acoustic rock, hard rock, even possibly a dash of funk and prog. This makes for an interesting album with some nice variety, but at the same time it maintains a consistent sound throughout. I can see it maybe having been an influence on a range of bands, from the obvious Led Zep, to R.E.M., to The Who, to Roxy Music. Some great guitar work, and really good songwriting. I wasn't blown away with the vocals, but there was nothing wrong with them either - just a personal taste thing. It was a little bit trippy at times, but more of a hippy trippy (environmentally themed, peave & love), than a weird freakout trippiness. No exceptional standout songs, but no duds or filler either, .a consistent quality, very good album that flowed well from beginning to end. 8/10, 17/20 for 1970, and 89/100 for the '70s.

Just gonna go with my favourite of these for now. Siamese Dream.

Black Wooden Ceiling Opening by Mount Eerie
It was nice to hear Phil trying to recreate classic Darkthrone. In the instrumental department at least. Kind of expected him to throw some Fenriz-type vocals in there as well, which unfortunately didn't happen. This is only a 21 minute EP, but the songs are all well crafted, interesting and unique with their blend of typical Mount Eerie folk/indie/lofi/drone and black metal. It's not nearly my favourite Phil Elvirum project, but it's a very admirable one-off experiment. Thank you Phil, very cool. 8/10

Agree with RoundTheBend, it's nice reading all of the reviews. Especially the ones bashing albums I love, I get a good laugh out of it. Can't wait to hear Baystate's take on SOAD Laughing

Modern Vampires Of The City by Vampire Weekend

Yikes, what a ******* toecurler...I don't understand what the point of this music is. It's adult contemporary for soccer dads that have bought nine albums in their entire lives. Vague, teenaged lyrics that seem to be about upgrading your Saab, or "Oh oh oh oh oh oh". Banal aesthetics that range from ugly, to annoying, to outright copy and pasted ("Step" is an obvious Zombies ripoff). Vocals you just want to punch. The same sort of dorky, half-assed melodies you hear in lame jingles for radio commercials. No real musicianship in sight. This was MOR and corny, part five. But somehow, much worse.

Also, the covers for their first three albums look like the stock artwork that you take out of new picture frames and throw away.

Who's the victim here, Bay? This album or me??

I was hoping I'd get a chance to pick Struttin' for Purple, so thanks for doing it for me. It jams. As for you:
