Ah, what a nice album to have at the top of a new page.

Vagina Diner by Akinyele

I didn't know that actually Baystate. And that was some prime wordplay. Laughing I knew Akinyele, but that was from his feature with Nas on "Breaking Atoms" by Main Source. And it seems like that connection continues here, because this album gets it's production from Large Professor, which makes it highly listenable even given the sometimes questionable content. Although, Akinyele himself is an engaging and fun MC himself. Has a Busta Rhymes kind of style. He's got that growl. I'm actually kind of surprised that this was released on Interscope records.

Baystate, it's time for you to listen to Deceit by This Heat. It gets better every time I listen to it.

Man not getting into the smash update is basically that Eric Andre meme. Or the ending of You Won't Get What You Want.

(1)

Why is this bad Chief? I mean that last track leaving the majority of its run time being silence has became one of the worst cliches in modern music, and I know it will continue. Is it the vocals? I think that will be it. Even though I would argue as the tracks go along they get more tolerable. But the real star of the show are these songs. Because musically speaking, I quite enjoy this. It sounds quite hazy and enveloping which is a sound style that I enjoy.
So grade wise it would be an 80. Could be an 85 but is an 80 for now.

They're the lesser-known and less popular post-grunge band from Canada, and when you're playing second fiddle to Nickelback that means something has gone horribly wrong.

You Won't Get What You Want by Daughters

ok - so I think after a couple listens I think this is better than my initial reaction. It felt a bit like a combination of Thrice's Fire EP and Jlin's Black Origami... but a bit more bleak. I thought it's tonality initially was lame and it's vocals were a bit too whiny... damn... I'm still torn. I love and hate it at the same time...85 for now. I really do think this is either shit or amazing... and I think it ends up being an interpretation issue. Sometimes the lyrics are powerful and then sometimes those same lyrics seem dumb. It caused me to pause, so props for that at least.

It is done. The top 100 for 2000 is over. Took a good three months but it's done. And I like to say that deserves a round of applause. Now onto the last review for the start of the new millennium.

(1)

I'm surprised that this album was the last album. It makes me consider to add a number to the album to see how long an album will be in the list. But also because I wished I listened to this sooner. Yeah this is one of those albums that by the first run down where I love it immensely. The variety in genre mixing where a song could be folk but also rock. The mix being quite full and enveloping. And other things that I might pick up or future listens. Grade wise:95 but could be a 100.

Now for the year itself. I quite enjoyed this year. Like a lot. Sure, there were some upsets both positive and negative but when I come out having several albums I adore while making me question what my 2000 list would look like, I'd say that it was a job well done. Will I come back to 2000? Maybe. I could see a RYM list since that wouldn't be as big and I could talk about some video game music when it is necessary. I mean, Majora's Mask OST is in there top 20. As well as getting that metal resolution finish.

(2)
Seth, Death has been clogging your list for a while. Lets get rid of Human. Also I do see that California coming up. Nobody pick that. If someone does, I'm gonna be pissed.

Really Livin' by Rascalz

Top shelf Canadian rap right here. This almost topped my chart. Just listen to this first song, man.

Link

Apparently they're more popular, because the Rascalz were already on the site. I got some Pharcyde vibes from this. It's very good.

Luigii, listen to The Shins. I hadn't listened to that album in forever, but I relistened to it when I saw it appear on you list. A fun record.

Deceit by This Heat

Fun, intriguing, avant-garde listen. When it works, it really works. But when it doesn't... I laughed at loud at Independence, for example. Well-worth immersing yourself in. 3.5/5.

2. Oh, Inverted World is my favorite of those. Especially New Slang. Damn it, beat me by 19 seconds. That'll show me not to finish my posts before I make them. Listen to the Bahamadia album. The first of your hip-hop journey that I've actually heard and can recommend.

Let's see if this upsets anyone.
(1)

Now this album is quite great. The sound palette is quite varied. Some of these songs feel a bit inspired by the Beatles. And I could tell that there is something special for this group. Now why am I not crazy about it? Well I would say is that though these songs are quite good, I feel like a some of these songs could had been given so more spices to give it some more pizzazz. I mean The Celibate Life sounds so lower compared to the rest but is one of the most ambitious. But more importantly, Caring Is Creepy somewhat got me expected this album would have been this rock album with dreamy electronics. Because those synths on that track are so good. But while there are tracks that were great for different reasons, it never lived up to the hype of the first track. Maybe those issues will be somewhat rectify when I am going through the 2003 list. But as of now the grade is an 80. Close to an 85 but is an 80.

I understand that. It took me a few listens to really get it (although I probably still don't Very Happy ) but it's now in my top 20 for the year.
