Tindersticks by Tindersticks

I had already enjoyed their second and third albums, but hadn't gotten around to this before because of its absence on US streaming. It is remarkably similar to what followed. Well-written, often morose lyrics; warm, wistful vocals; tasteful, subdued chamber pop arrangements. I don't find the length to be justified or the songcraft strong enough to make it truly great. That said, this is a very good album. And the frequent comparisons to The National are misplaced in my opinion. 3.5/5.

My Favorite Things by John Coltrane

It's a John Coltrane album, of course it's great. I'd be lying if this will ever be a personal favorite due to this just not being the style of jazz I prefer, but it's a great, relaxing mid-day listen. Was a bit surprised he was such an Ariana Grande fan that he riffed on that melody for 13 minutes though.

Perils From The Sea by Mark Kozelek &am...my Lavalle

This is one of my favorite Kozelek albums. Half pretty good, half some of the best songs he's ever written.

Deeparture In Time by Aril Brikha

Pretty cool that this is a techno album from Iran. I wasn't expecting that. That being said, it's surprsingly by the numbers considering it was an international album. It would've been great if the artist could have incorporated some elements of his home country into the music. It's OK, and there are a few good tunes, but it lacks the consistency to justify it's runtime.

Baby blue, I would go with Boy. U2's first.

Powerslave by Iron Maiden

I never really got into '80s heavy metal, but it was popular around me so I've heard my fair share of Maiden songs over the years. Respectfully it's not something I enjoy that much. Musically it's fine, sometimes interesting, sometimes not, with what seems like a pretty consistent quality throughout. For some reason I got into the instrumental track the most. So a good album, just not my taste 6.5/10, and 29/32 for 1984.

I'm not very good at picking techno albums it seems. How about Vapourspace?

Themes From Vapourspace by Vapourspace

Better pick this time Purple! This was interesting as there really aren't any cuts in between tracks, so it makes it fell like your just listening to one constantly evolving track, kind of like a faux-DJ Set. I'll have to listen to it again, because some parts get real quiet and ambient-like, but the beat always comes back.

Purple, why is Ride The Lightning on there? Very Happy

Perils From The Sea by Mark Kozelek &am...my Lavalle

Great album! Lots of outstanding songwriting, and it's nice that this provides an electronic change of pace from Kozelek's typical sonic palette. The lyrics are often deeply melancholy, and yet they also feel so warm and full of love for humanity. Definitely a positive shift from say, Lord Kill The Pain... Razz There are so many contenders for best song, but on first listen Gustavo stood out to me the most. Judging by the track ratings, I'm not alone. 4/5.

Black Messiah by D'Angelo And The Vanguard

This seems to serve only one purpose: masking the noises made by married couples during baby-making. It isn't close to being engaging enough to actively listen to. D'Angelo has a great voice, but he works very hard to keep it down in the mix and out of the foreground. So, it's kind of like listening to someone sing who thinks there's no one around. "Till It's Done (Tutu)" sounds like it's trying to inch its foot over the midground line into the foreground and chickens out. But, I might just think that because it's my favorite song off the album. Overall, this is really good purpose-made music. It does have a hazy sound reminiscent of the recently-listened-to There's A Riot Going On, which I appreciate. I do have it on again, and I'll say that the songs are catchier than I found them to be the first time around. Infectious even. This sentence, like every other in this paragraph, does not follow from the preceding sentence. I must now sleep.

Ride The Lightning by Metallica

I've heard a lot of Metallica over the places over the years, and I'm sure I would have heard this album before, but not for a long time, and I can't be certain. Escape was the only song I didn't know well, if at all. It was great to hear such a classic thrash album and get it in my charts where it deserves to be. Fade To Black and Creeping Death are incredible songs. 8.5/10, and 10/33 for 1984, and 95/100 for the '80s.

Otis needs to be heard Jameth.

Music For 18 Musicians by Steve Reich
Never wanted to dive into Reich's discography before, cause of the enormous amount of albums he has. It seemed kind of intimidating. But you know when David Bowie puts an album by a classical composer on his list of "must have" vinyls, it's probably something special. Spoiler alert: it is. Every contemporary classical composer that delves into minimal music must've taken a note from 18 Musicians. I'm not too familiar with avant-garde, minimal or otherwise out-of-the-box 20th century classical (except for the occasional Terry Riley, Gorecki or Moondog), but judging by the album's Wikipedia page it must've been a huge deal in 1978. Anyways it's a great listen. It could be a bit more diverse in the second half (the impact of repetitive chord loops is not as strong towards the end), but I loved it nonetheless. A solid 8.5/10

Dreamtime is (controversially) my favourite Cult release, and one of the most underrated 80s (goth) albums. The closer is especially cinematic and moody.

Landlocked by Hallucinator

Nice! A record from the famous Chain Reaction label. Landlocked is barely a techno album in the way that I think of techno, but it fits the dub techno/ dub ambient label nicely. So much so, that I could barely differentiate some of these songs if I tried. I really tranced out whil listening to this one, which is usually a good thing, but I think it was caused by some disinterest by the latter half. At times it reminded me of stuff that Deepchord would be doing later in the 2000s. Those would be the highlights of the album.

Ledzep, since I nominated Andy Falkous for the songwriter tournament, I'm going to make you listen to his bizarre ramblings with Future of the Left.
