Paket Aranžman by Various Artists

I'm always happy to listen to punk from places other than the US and UK, and this comp seemed like it's important for the Balkan region. I thought the tunes were decent and the mood appropriately aggressive. I can only assume that it's probably a politically charged album regarding whatever was going on in the former Yugoslavia at the time. Can you shed any light on that Ledzep?

Ritual De Lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction

This album didn't leave a strong impression on me. It was pretty good throughout, and very consistent in quality. I didn't find the musical style, songwriting, or craftsmanship to be especially distinctive. I heard hints of other alt-rock bands I think are good but not particularly compelling, like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Queens Of The Stone Age. A pleasant listen. 3/5.

Unfortunately, I could not find a way to listen to Joel Chadabe. Shame, because the two tracks available sound pretty cool. It's also a "Lovely Music" album which is a great record label. It's actually not too expensive on discogs, so maybe I'll pick it up sometime.

Very "Stars of the Lid" inspired ambient music with a unique female vocal approach. I would like to here more from this group in the future.

Deep Purple In Rock by Deep Purple

Oh yeah!! This shit ROCKS!!! Especially Child In Time. I particularly enjoyed the many instrumental sections, although the really high screaming vocals also worked for me. 8/10, 13/26 for 1970, and good enough to come in at #80 in my decade chart.



I can't go past Danielle Dax- Pop Eyes which seems intriguing.

Okay, i'm a newbie, but i'm gonna try to do this.

I actually started listening to music with the Doors, so Purplepash, you're gonna have to listen to Morrison Hotel

It's a great album, not so much acclaimed as L.A Woman or Strange Days, but it's a pretty good starting point for the Doors as it has some of the greatest straight bangers of their carrers. Peace Frog in particular is so frickin good.

The Madcap Laughs by Syd Barrett

I really enjoyed this album, definitely more than The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. According to RYM, it's a blend of psychedelic folk and rock. While Barrett sounds quite nice in both styles, I prefer the folkier tracks. At its best, this album is a sublime blend of great vocals, instrumentation, and lyrics. The track list is a mix of these gorgeous moments with others that feel more half-baked, perhaps even intentionally. This adds to the charm of the album, as it feels more like a snapshot in time and less calculated. But it makes for a record that is a bit inconsistent in quality. 3.5/5.

Pop-Eyes by Danielle Dax

Good avant-garde type album that is reminescent of The Pop Group at times. Which is high praise from me, because I love "Y". I'll need to listen to her work before her solo career, and the album after this one, to get a full picture of her music.

Beautiful Freak is not my favorite from EELS, but I always enjoy listening to E's music.

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean

It's a slightly better listen than GKMC for 2012, but still mostly listless and dull. The lyrics don't help either, given how unrelatable they are. I'm not a super rich kid and I'm not looking to get blazed and melt into a couch with a bowl of Lucky Charms. I can maybe give Ocean the benefit of the doubt and say that his intent was to criticize hedonistic behavior with at least some of these lyrics, but then again, I can't. A lot of them just reek of rich boy Epicureanism and a couple of these tracks are just painfully dumb (see: "Forrest Gump").

Also, if I'm being honest, "Pyramids" is something akin to "Unskinny Bop".

Modern Vampires of the City - Vampire Weekend

I liked this one more than i though i would. The instrumentations were quite complex (this baroque piano !) but also deconstructed at times which is a good thing for me.
On the other hand, i don't really care for Ezra Koenig's voice. I found it full of the kind of mannerism you would expect from a indie pop-rock singer, and it doesn't feel sincere to me.
Still a pretty good album, i could see it growing on me.
