Best Country Song: Space Cowboy

Not even close to being the best song on the album...

I agree that it's not the best song on the album, but it's still the best song out of the nominees. Do you have a different favorite nominee?

Pacific Daydream should not be here at all. How they came to the conclusion that it deserved to be nominated is completely beyond me. It wasn't getting praise from any major media outlet was it?

Yeah, the rock album category is truly ridiculous. Here's the RYM reception of the nominees for some context:

Rainier Fog by Alice In Chains: 3.17 (878th best album of 2018)
Mania by Fall Out Boy 1.44 (8th worst album of 2018)
Prequelle by Ghost 3.27 (378th best album of 2018)
From The Fires by Greta Van Fleet 2.97 (288th best EP of 2017)
Pacific Daydream by Weezer 2.13 (52nd worst album of 2017)

There are two common threads: one is that all the bands have pretty big fan bases, and the other is that none of the albums have any business being nominated. Almost makes you think the voters are not actually music fans...

Pacific Daydream by Weezer 2.13 (top 1000 of neither)

????

?????????

???????????????????

(Also, Baystateofheart, I think that's the wrong Greta Van Fleet album, they actually nominated an EP from 2017)

Feeling bad for Parquet Courts.

Oops, good catch. Edited.

Greta Van Fleet got a total of four nominations, btw: Best New Artist, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song & Best Rock Album.

Here's the average critical reception of each by music publications for some more context (courtesy of AOTY, which is more comprehensive than Metacritic):

Rainier Fog by Alice In Chains: 72 (444th best album of 2018)
Mania by Fall Out Boy 53 (688th best album of 2018)
Prequelle by Ghost 78 (213th best album of 2018)
From The Fires by Greta Van Fleet 53 (not ranked for 2017)
Pacific Daydream by Weezer 56 (697th best album of 2017)

For context, AOTY has critical receptions ranked for 700 albums from 2018 and 715 from 2017. From The Fires is not ranked due to not getting reviewed by enough publications.

Np.

I think I say this every year, but this is possibly the most embarrassing line-up of nominees yet. Can't believe this is what music gets for an award show.

And they really didn't like that dig Jay-Z slipped into Everything Is Love by the looks of it Laughing

But yeah, this is just sad. Anyone know if Kamasi Washington submitted his album for the jazz categories? I know it's expensive and I don't think he particularly cares, but he deserves a nod without a second thought. I think it's been an exciting year for jazz, particularly out of the UK, but the Grammys definitely don't seem to care Neutral

I don't think the Grammys actually know anything about jazz, or even rock for that matter. They occasionally don't blow it out of their ass in pop, but that's about it. I'm not sure whet their criteria is, but the nominees in most categories never make much sense.

And no, Kamasi Washington is not in there, which comes as no surprise to me. The only nominee I got excited about was Brad Mehldau, but even he shows up in the wrong category (best improvised jazz solo vs. best instrumental album). And the cut in question is from 2017.

The Grammys make the RRHOF look legit.

Very true!

The two biggest problems are that there's an entry process to even be considered, and that only direct music industry participants vote. Sports awards are mostly decided by sports journalists, who are almost entirely neither players nor former players. The quality of those awards and of year-end lists by music journalists is generally much better than the Grammys.

JOS! JOS! We agree on something! Very Happy

I like how they increased the category size to stuff in more crap.

Sadly the general field categories were the only awards that have more nominees this time. If every award had more nominees maybe my shut out favorites would've had better chances of getting included. I never did tell about Dierks Bentley and Brett Young in my previous message. "Woman, Amen" from Dierks couldn't have been a better song to release during his 15th year as a singer getting played on the radio (Can you believe that "What Was I Thinking?" is that old now?) and "Have Mercy" from Brett Young.....that song should've been nominated for Best Country Song if it couldn't have made it in there for the Best Country Solo Performance award.

God bless you and Dierks and Brett always!!!

Holly

P.S. The newest song from Dierks named "Burning Man" could've been in there for the Best Country Duo/Group Performance award and still...nothing. Rolling Eyes Shocked Not talking
