I haven't heard much Melnyk but I think what Svirsky does on this record playing two pianos at the same time to create a sort of manual flexible delay, repeating something from one hand quickly with another in a way that couldn't be done with one piano because the hands would get in the way of each other, and get extremely flexible with the passage of time is really incredible stuff. This one is one of my top picks for sure!

Windmills by Lubomyr Melnyk

Mr. Green

Thanks for the rec Chief. Will get on it.

this seems completely different to me, more of a steady flow here.

That's what the "lite" was there for. There has to be some inspiration from "continuous music" on a few of the tracks, but a more disjointed version of it. Glad it's got some other fans Very Happy

1:45 to around 2:10 is where I could see some similarities.

The Little Brother album is fantastic. It's become one of my favorite hip-hop albums this year for sure. I recommend it to any hip-hop fan exploring 2019 tbh

It's just that it needs two pianos for the piece. I'll get on the Svirsky record sometime tomorrow to fully grasp what you're saying though.

Something like an Ella & Louis album.

There's a new Bonnie "Prince" Billy if anybody's still interested. It's called I Made a Place and I haven't listened to it yet.

Thanks again for all the cool recs.

Schlagenheim by Black Midi

What this album is:

Better than I anticipated. Sounds like what a good debut should be like, because it seems like the band gets more focused and confident as the album runs on.

What this album isn't:

Groundbreaking in the slightest.

This album is the "You Won't Get What You Want" of 2019. A competent, well-made, and interesting album that is nowhere near as revolutionary as the internet has claimed it to be. I don't know how these albums find a wide audience that declares it to be way more than it is. F*ck, I mean, there's a comment for this album on this site that compares it to "tRouT MAsK RePLiCa", because it's "unconventional". There are plenty of other misguided comparisons as well from Bloc Party to Talking Heads and all sorts of incomprehensible rubbish. It's just good music made by some dudes who will hopefully keep making music the way they want to make it.

Yeah just got around to it, I agree the hype has been overly messianic for what's a pretty good post-punk album that doesn't exactly blow the lids off that already well-traveled genre. Kinda reminds me of the stunned reaction to Sunbather (a very good album as well) which was treated as if it's mixing of shoegaze and lite-black metal was something revolutionary. Schlengaschinitzl or whatever it's called is quite good, especially if that sound's up your alley, but there's more interesting and adventerous bands out there that don't get nearly as much attention.

Also anybody heard the new Liturgy?

if you think Schlagenheim is a stock record thats been done 500 times before then you probably are trying to go against the grain

its not revolutionary or particularly new, shit, but it is interesting and unique in its own way of grasping all these sort of sounds together
