Signals Into Space by Ultramarine

Here's my first addition of the year, and my first album listened of 2019. It's pretty good for an old techno duo.

Various Artists - Ferocactus pilosus

A pleasantly diverse selection of deep house cuts, courtesy of new label Cactus Traxx, who have decided to showcase five likeminded but nevertheless distinctive producers, each presenting a standout cut which could easily be mistaken for an A-side: the cartoonish bedroom bongo Balearic of D Roots; the moody ADHD New Age of Ray Kandinsky; the blown-out 'Gypsy Woman' stylings of DJ Barbo$$a; the anxious cowbell acid of Fede Lng; and the creeping Gallic euphoria of Slim Steve. Nothing here is especially innovative, even if I did find something fresh about field recording-incorporating, melody-starved offering from Kandinsky, but there's an upfront passion on display in all of these tracks, which rely on pure feeling, comforting vocal samples, and woozy synths to get their point across. Whilst unlikely to be hovering around the upper echelons of my 2019 chart for too long, it's a wonderful introduction to an exciting new label. Check it out.

Penrose Winoa by Oro Swimming Hour

simple lo-fi / bedroom pop with well-written songs and charming aesthetic. kind of a cool album cover too. it's currently atop my 2019 list, and i suspect it could stay there through the end of the year.

It's a cool record but pretty sure it's about 18 months old at this point.

Bandcamp release says January 6 of this year, but it looks like you’re right. Ha. Don’t let Bandcamp lie to you.

Officially out in March but fully available now if you preorder; can also freely stream 3 compositions now. Polarizing, because it's 100% voice, but I predict this will be one of the contenders for AOTY already.

It should come as no surprise that I'm looking forward to the new Dream Theater release, Distance Over Time. They just released a video for the first single, Fall Into Light, which is absolutely classic DT, so now I'm even more stoked.
