Yeah, I revisited Joshua Tree recently and it more than holds up. Though U2 can seem a bit bland and overblown lately, there is definitely something special in their earlier work -Joshua Tree in particular. You forget how good it is.

It is imo incredibly underrated in my book, even if I personally could choose a few other albums as my #1, I partially do it for that underrated status I think it has. I think corenfro's quote I added to my chart beautifully sums it up:

Quote:
"Is there a more life-affirming album than The Joshua Tree? Bono’s soaring voice and with The Edge’s revolutionary guitar style take the listener through a spiritual, socially conscious atmosphere of the most intense of human feeling. The Joshua Tree is a breath of clean air. It was meant to be listened to while driving across America, and has an intensely personal meaning...

But in all the desolation of some of the topics of the album: death, loss, heroin addiction, discontent, there is one unbreakable theme of this album: hope. U2’s unbreakable mission of hope is on full display on this album. The songs are dripping with a sense of seeking spiritual renewal. If you close your eyes and listen to Bono’s beautiful tenor, and some of the best guitar work in rock that doesn’t distract with lengthy solos, you might just find some spiritual renewal on the Joshua Tree."

Also I think this is due for an update and is an ever going project like for most of you equally insane people out there (the search for "it" is never over), but I need more data and I'm far from done. A conclusion is what you come to when you stop thinking.

It's charts like this that make me remember that I don't know anything about music. Of the recent stuff on here that I recognize, there's some great choices (loving the LCD and Vampire Weekend picks), but there's just so much here that I've heard of but never listened to.

Very good one album per artist chart, with the challenging Rite of Spring at N°6.
Also, Sea Change by Beck at N°5: are you sure ? Smile

I feel this way sometimes too. Keep up your trek just like all of us.

At #5? Maybe not certain... probably not certain of anything except that it totally belongs on my chart for how it's arguably one of the most emotionally powerful albums made and musically is up there too. Where it ranks is really arbitrary/subjective anyone, right? For me it was a song for song thing, but as the math worked out for me, it could be at #9 or #1 and it probably wouldn't make a difference to me (based on a song by song analysis, not as a whole, I suppose... maybe... haha).

i read a comment posted by you, stating how much you enjoy Becks "sea change".
I have listened to it several times. Its really good.
Its different-- more acoustic.
I love his "mellow gold and odelay", but this is starting to grow on me as well.
thanks for the recommendation
